Speaker combos: Worth it?

I got this idea from an old post on this forum: Wiring a couple of guitar drivers into the top row of an 8x10 cabinet with a high-pass filter.

Do any of you have experience with this? Does it really add something to your sound? I'm refurbishing an old SVT cab, and it seems since it doesn't have a horn, some higher frequency drivers might brighten it up.

There's a thread on here about a Bergantino NV610 someone replaced one driver with an 8" speaker and a crossover. Several of us on here have also run a pair (or quad) of Jensen MOD10-50's in out SVT810E's with decent results. Barefaced cabs has the '69er in the works which where one side is full range and the is crossed over to support low end to increase dispersion.

Out of curiosity, what year is the cabinet? If it's an early '70's with the CTS speakers, there's no need to change anything and plenty of bassists happy to use them just as they are. ;)

Its an old '72 straight back, and man if it still had the original speakers I wouldn't touch it. I imagine when the previous owner got a hold of it some of the speakers were probably broken or missing, and he parted it out. So as it stands, I've just got the empty enclosure, and I've been going back and forth on how to get my new speaker situation sorted out.

Someone else mentioned the idea of wiring the two columns to handle different frequencies as well, I should do a poll or something... hmm.

Man I've been digging around all day looking for good info on how to get this set up. There's plenty of praise for the 69er style setup, but I can't find any real detail on how you go about making the crossover itself. How do you choose the frequency at which to run it, etc? I totally apologize too if there's a whole huge thread about this that I missed, but I can't seem to find it.

There was a Berg NV 610 mod thread floating around. I havnt read through it so I dont know what it contains, but it may be something you want to look into. There are a few cross over guru's here that may chime in, but you will have to build it yourself. I would suspect you would want to cross over somewhere just below the mids area, to avoid dispersion issues.

Guitar speakers don't have that much more high end than most bass speakers. If you're looking to get more high end you should look at adding midrange drivers which will be smaller than 10".

There is no point in crossing over full range drivers with a mid, the mids are already covered. Now adding a mid range driver to a LF driver is another case. Here you are asking each driver to do something different, which the other is not capable of doing. A 3015LF will not reproduce mids/highs the way an 18Sound 6MN410 mid will. That said, you are not going to get the low end out of the mid drivers either. This has nothing to do with driver size, but the frequency band that the drivers were designed to work in.
