Speaker flapping?

Hello, I was playing the bass and I am not used to using such a powerful speaker.. I think I drive it a fairly low volume and I noticed a flapping sound as I play the lowest string. I removed the front grill to inspect.. the cone looks ok. it's a combo EDEN AC15.

It looks like it's it's coming from the speaker directly, the recording does not do justice to reality, at 10 and 11 seconds the sound is more obvious with headphones.(At each note the speaker makes Trrr, Trrr)

Most likely, what could this be?

This is a very limited, entry level combo. At higher volume, if you are boosting the bass eq, what you are experiencing is what I would expect. IIRC, it's about 100 watts into the internal speaker and 180 watts with an extension cabinet.

@agedhorse Ok tonight I'll try to boost the bass and see what is happening. I'll pull the speaker out of the enclosure tonight to investigate further.
@MrBassman22 Bofff.. i want to have the deep bass from a bass speaker really.
@jimmydean, i'll investigate loose components tonight..
@HardNHeavy I really think it's the speaker, i'll retest tonight anyway with more bass boost and more volume.
@DuluthDank @lug I'll try it in another room to rule out room vibration.

Thanks for the tips.

Be careful. You seem to be interpreting the advice as "try boosting the bass," when people are suggesting that it's a matter of your amp not being able to tolerate high bass levels. It just may not be possible to get the deep bass you desire from this unit. Don't push it too hard and cause damage.
Agreed, comprehension appears to be a part of the challenge here.

No, I won't drive the unit at maximum power with bass boost, i've used other speakers before. The flapping is at fairly low volume already, what I meant is, I am going to boost it up a bit and see.

Don't look like a big deal, that speaker can be replaced.

@agedhorse
I found the discontinued replacement speaker (if the problem is that), the amplifier of the AC15 is rated 180w and the speaker is rated 300, it's not indicated if it's 300w RMS or Peak. I see 300w RMS speakers replacements.

Ok i've got many things to try, Investigation time for the next hour.

Update: The faulty sound is the same with another bass, it's the same in a different room. According to another person, the vibration comes from the combo directly like if something is vibrating inside of the enclosure. I tried with a bit of bass boost, it don't look worse very much.

Some pictures of the investigation, it's a very simple device so far.. For those interested to see inside, see the second link with all the images.

I think this is not impressive, the insulation around the amplifier is not well installed IMO. I'll test the speaker free air and if it's ok, i'll fix the insulation properly. (And I'll check out the front panel grid as well.. i removed it once and had to break some glue to remove it.. maybe they installed some glue there because of a vibration.)

put a strong light on one side of your speaker cone in a dark room and see if you can spot any tears. that might explain the flapping, especially if you're running too much power or too much bass through a small amp. i've torn a couple speakers by pushing them too hard, and one definitely made a slight flap.

I just tried the speaker free air and can't hear a thing wrong with it. However I found something critical.

The insulation is blocking the porthole and it's literally free, it can move up and down.. I think this is it.

Ok problem solved.. the flapping was totally the insulation blocking the port hole.. I used a couple of tacks and a screw + a large washer to screw it down, not it can't move no more, it's not touching the port anymore and I get zero flapping, only a pure bass sound.

I think this combo sounds pretty good.. the engineering of it was user friendly as well.

:D Great evening, great :D

Excellent, this is why thorough troubleshooting is so important, and jumping to conclusions often leads to incorrect results. This kind of noise will usually get worse with bass boost and higher volume since the port velocity is proportional to displacement which is proportional to low frequency power.

That speaker is not 300 watts RMS, no way based on the photos of the VC-cone apex. It's probably around 150 watts RMS give or take a few.
