Dear live sound enthusiasts

Any experience with these types of stands from K&M, Chauvet Flex Stand, Gravity else? I’m looking for a couple of stands for led lights that have a smaller footprint and they seem, on paper, to fit my needs. I have a preference for this K&M :

I would put 4 pars and 1 or 2 movers (+/- 15 kg) so under their 20kg limit.

Thanks

K&M 24650
  • Base is 19.25" x 19.25"
  • Max Height is 95.28"
  • Weight is 32lbs
  • Max load is 44lbs

They may be fairly tippy, unless some sort of ballast is added.

A tripod is likely to be lighter, more stable, and taller, but of course have a bigger footprint.

My organization used base plates with pipe to elevate Chauvet moving heads. The baseplate we used were bigger and heavier. Also, I believe we had some sort of wheeled cart carry them. This was professional grade theatrical gear and it was not cheap.

It's been too long to remember the details, but I believe they were similar to this:

Yeah, I suspect they will work in limited situations. I suspect the adages about off-center loads is more important here. Question: would you want to take responsibility for damages if they tip over? On the other hand, K&M know what they are doing. I would contact them.

I would put them close to the walls, certainly not where people could be in contact with them. I saw reviews where some added ballasts, and some who refused to use them…

Just a follow-up

Stands arrived last week and had a chance to use them in 2 out-of-town gigs with 4 led pars on each stand. I’m impressed by their stability, even when the pole is at its highest position. Haven’t tried with movers yet but I’m not worried if I stay under the prescribed limitation.

I use the 2' square plates from Global to support a 6' section of F33 truss and an annul event. Each truss supports a65" flat screen. I also nestle 3 sandbags onto the plate. That plate is a monster to move. Also a pain to store unless the truss adaptors are pulled and who want to take the time to uninstall, re-install ? Not me... For what I do, I wouldn't go near those K&M without ballast. YMMV but I'd be sure to have my professional liability paid up!
