Speaker size(s).

New to the forums (hi!) and starting to shop for a bass rig, so my first question to you all is this:

What do you feel would be an optimal go-to cabinet size to cover both playing out (small venue obviously) and recording? 1 15"? 2x10 or 2x12? Something else?

The music style is prog-oriented, some light, some heavier, and I'd be using a 5 string. (not sure if this info is relevant to the decision).

Speaker size has no bearing on tone. Each driver is will sound a certain way, and that is not dictated by the size of said driver.


For me, by best small cab is a fEARful 12/6/1. Covers all my needs tonally for playing out and for recording.

Any or all of those could work well in your situation. The size of the driver itself (or drivers) will tell you little about how the manufacturer voiced the cabinet, what it's power handling is, what it's sensitivity is or it's impedance.

In other words, we need a lot more information in order to help you. Also, this topic has been pretty well bludgeoned already, so use the search functions to check out other threads. It's often a slog through pages and pages of opinions, but you can glean good information from it.

The 12/6/1 fEARful is a tremendous cab. No disagreement. None. Really.

I favor a 15/6, however, employing a 15" Eminence 3015LF (low frequency) & a 6.5" 18Sound 6ND410 midrange speaker. If you need a tweeter, then make it a 3-way, but the 6ND410 goes to 8kHz. It's a slightly larger cab, but capable of much more potential volume. The single best single-cab solution, imho.

I need warm bottom with clear highs, sound which pops up in mix.. clear, with bottom and punch! without possible disttorted tone in high volumes!

If you are asking about the 212 you must be in europe, as it is not available in the states.

My suggestion to you is go play all three cabs in your post heading. Then pick the one you like the best. If you need more volume use a second identical cab.


That said IMHO Markbass doesnt produce a cab that I would consider buying, but my tonal goals may not be anywhere close to yours.

Soo... after reading up a bit more, I pulled the trigger on a used Berg HT322. Likely to wind up being far more cabinet than I actually ever need, but it's hardly the first piece of gear I own to fall into that category Now to get the rest of the setup, lol.
