Speaker size v. Tone: I don't hear any correlation

leo may have been behind the greatest basses in the world, but for some reason his genius didn't translate to amps. they sounded great at low volumes and that was about it. even when ampeg's bass amps weren't as good as the portaflexes, they were still cleaning fender's clock for bass amps.
That's because Leo was, in a word, cheap. Rather than have distinct guitar and bass lines, both speaker and amp, he used the same amps and cabs, with minor modifications, for both. That saved $ on everything from R&D to parts inventory to manufacturing tooling.
Keep in mind that Fender guitars and basses were the mass produced Fords as compared to the Mercedes grade hand crafted Gibsons. He still managed to create nice sounding instruments and guitar amps. As for his bass amps, well, two out of three ain't bad. :hmm:

There are two eternal questions in this universe:

1. What was happening a few weeks before the Big Bang?

2. Will there ever come a time when people realize that BFM knows his chit?

I always crack up when I see noobs who don't know who BFM is questioning his knowledge and, sometimes, even telling him he is wrong. They always learn later. Welcome to learning.

I know back when I used to think a bassist needed 15's or 18's, I discovered that multiple 10's really do sound better... to me. And this realization came without aid of any ad or salesman. It just happened one day in the life of a teenager checking different stuff out.

Why is this? I don't know, nor do I really care. I know I never felt a 15" or 18" speaker "punch" like a 10", nor carry the full range of the upper end of bass guitar.

Im one of the VERY VERY VERY VERY FEW on the TALK BASS speaker acoustics' polital correct forum. That can't help but hear Bigger speakers sound smoother than smaller speakers. IN GENERAL <-- PEOPLE HATE THIS PART.

I dont care for ANY scientific spread sheets that state the smaller speakers can produce freq just as low or something similar because they always rule out the human element.

Were not computers, we dont hear a note and think of it in hertz and level and wave shape. We hear a SOUND. I believe that the human mind interprets lowness or smoothness differently from what science and a graph of a sound wave does.

I applaud your not going off of the spread sheets and graphs and specs, but by your ears.

BUT

Remember the human element. Just as a big speaker sounds like it can go lower than a small speaker to someone who believes it so. So can a small speaker sound deeper or lower than a larger speaker by someone who believes the newer trend of thinking.

Same as that GK stack is the best sounding rig you have ever heard because your favorite player uses it.

Or that markbass amp and cab has the most amazing tone you have ever heard.... Because your sitting in a guitarcenter and you don't OWN it.


DONT FORGET THE HUMAN ELEMENT.

Go listen to an Acme B1 next to a Schroeder 115+L back to back and tell me this again.
 
Years ago I did a compared my Acme against my Flite loaded with an EV 15. As a result I dumped the Acme and still use the Flite.

That would be a different topic. I too like cabs voiced a bit more to the upper bass and midrange. However, this is another good example of a cab with smaller drivers sounding much more deeply voiced than another cab with a larger driver. Which one meets your tone goals is, of course, a personal choice.

I dumped my Acme because my Flite/EV has better lowend response in the real world and is much more efficient.

Similar to my reasons for moving on from my Acme cabs, but in the spirit of this thread, the 10" drivers of the Acme extend WAY lower than the 15 driver you are using, much less that 15" driver in that tiny little box.

Agreed though, my little Bag End 15 (pretty similar to your cab) always sounded much better 'on the gig' to me for my playing style and tone goal than my B210... but it surely didn't 'go lower because it was a larger driver'.

In truth, it didn't. It had better midbass, an octave higher than where the Acme would reach, with at least 6dB higher sensitivity there. A perfect example of the fallacy of equating response with driver size.
If you put an Acme (woofers only) and EVM15 loaded cab behind a curtain, driven with the same signal to the same output level, I'd venture 99 out of 100 listeners would think the Acme was the fifteen loaded cab and the EV the ten loaded cab.
