Speaker Size

Well, I definitely learned something. My headless 8ohm Avatar 115 and 210 are crying for an RB800. And I was going to go with a Shuttle or something..
Except that as soon as you cross the lows out of that 2x10, it becomes pointless to drag it out; a single 6" mid driver like the fEARful idea would probably do a better job.

You might as well put the 2x10 on the lows and the 15 on the highs ;)
 
Feeding the same signal to two different speakers, each of which reproduce the sound differently, throw differently, react differently to processing and EQing...

Just can’t be the best way.

Eating a bite of food with 2 or 3 different ingredients that all have different flavors, different textures, have different melting points, etc...

Sorry, but there is NO scientific basis for what you are saying. MI amplification is an imprecise "science" and there's a LOT of interpretation and subjective assessments involved. These don't eliminate the "science" aspects, but they do sometimes counteract them in ways you might not expect.

People "mix" (speakers, food ingredients, textiles, etc...) to achieve results that no singular component could achieve on it's own. To almost completely disregard the possibility of mixing just because of 1 or 2 aspects of speaker interaction that might not be optimal, and ignoring whether any other aspects are enhanced by that mixing, is frankly ridiculous, and when it's repeated over and over so voracious here by a vocal few, it dampens creativity and experimentation that JUST MIGHT lead someone to "their" tone, that they otherwise wouldn't achieve.

The way you taste is additive chemical signals. Sound has constructive and destructive interference. Your analogy has as much merit as comparing golf carts to wave runners for air travel.

So, more cabs you got, the loader it is (thats what I got out of that)

But about number of speakers?
Say you got one cab and a 100w head.
If that cab has 2 speakers would there be 200w of power coming out??
And 4 speakers 400w?

Or how does the number o speakers affect volume?

Yes and no. A tube head doesnt increase in power as you change the impedance (Ohms) of your cabs. As long as the output transformer is rated at what your cabs are you will get the same amount of power. That said, as you double the speakers, you gain 3 dB of volume. So my tube head into one 8 ohm 15/6 will out put 400 watts. The same head into my 4 ohm 1515/66 is still only going to produce 400 watts, but I have now gained 3 dB of sensitivity and will be louder.

This is not the case with a SS head. My SS head into a 4 Ohm cabinet produces around 350 watts of power. Add a second 4 Ohm cab (my head is 2 ohm stable) and now my SS head produces 600 watts of power. I have gained 3 dB from doubling my speakers, and another 3 dB from the power increase, total of 6 dB increase.

Always make sure that your heads can handle the impedance load you are asking it to work with. If you dont know how impedances add check out the stickies at the top of the forums for a lot more info.

Sorry but you're wrong. Just like with sound, certain tastes can "mask" others, like how if you add sugar to a spicy dish, it takes away the spiciness.

Anyway, that's not important. The point is that there are complex interactions that happen when you mix things that can provide a more interesting/better "flavor" (be it taste or sound or something else entirely), depending on what you are mixing.

As far as subtractive/additive, that really makes almost no difference. They're all just "changes". Depending on where you start from and where you move to, the changes could be good or bad, just like anything else. Like if you have a bass amp that's deadly clean and you want some more grind, a little more gain would be a good thing. But if you had an amp that somehow only went moderate OD to sounding like a Mesa triple rec, adding more gain would probably be detrimental. Everything is relative. If you take a bassier cab and a more trebly cab and put them together, there's a good chance they will balance each other out. If you have 2 bassy cabs or 2 trebly cabs, they'll reinforce those more prominent elements and it will be that much more bassy or trebly, which usually isn't ideal.

Sure, you can search the world with a pocket full of $$$ for the single perfect cab and then get 2 of them, or you can widen your search and just find 2 cabs that might not be amazing on their own, but work very well together (for probably cheaper than a single "do it all" cab).

Do you guys not have Guitar Center where you live or something? Or a solid local shop that stocks multiple amps and cabinets?

Because there's a very easy way to predict how two cabinets will sound together... you take your bass into the store and you plug into every combination that interests you and see how it sounds.

Will the different audible frequencies interact with each other in weird and unusual ways? Sure they will, but if you like the result than that's all that matters. It's only a gamble if you're buying cabinets without playing them together... in which case your problem is not frequency combination, it's bad consumer habits.

If every room were an identical guitar center and you had somebody else play it while you moved all over the store then that would be fine. Cancellation is dependent on the shape of the room you're in---it probably isn't going to happen right in front of the cabinets. It is "unpredictable" because you can't have every member of the audience stand directly in front of your cab like you did in GC.

It's my understanding that cancellation from room shape happens in all scenarios, including with matched cabs. Is that not true?

If it is true, room shape is impossible to predict. Unless you're a studio musician, or playing arenas, you take the gigs you can get.

Probably so, but the same signal with different frequencies accentuated isn't going to help the situation.

If you're a studio musician or playing arenas it matters a whole lot less because you're mic'ing your cab/going to the PA which is carrying the room. This issues matters MOST to people who aren't in studios or arenas.

mostly yeah; you plug in more cabinets and the total impedance drops (the "ohms" don't add, but sort of "divide" as you add cabinets) and the amp produces more power.

if you keep adding, you go below what the amp can do, it tries to produce more watts than it's able to, and it burns up.

kinda like an electric motor spinning faster and faster; it delivers more and more power, but eventually it spins too fast and dies.

no, it's about the impedance of the whole cab.

an 8Ω single 15 cab and an 8Ω 4x10 cab will both get the same amount of watts from the amp.

Sorry but you are wrong. Different flavors are the result of the interpretation of different chemicals. One may have your attention, but it doesnt necessarily make the other disappear. Either way you analogy is as flawed as your reasoning for mixing different full range speakers.

The internet. Before it most players went to music stores and tried gear before buying, so they knew what they were getting. Today most players buy their gear on-line, never having heard it. There's no way to predict how different combinations will work. With matched cabs you know exactly what you're getting. And if you take someones advice based on their taste how do you know your tastes are the same?
