except that typical 4x10s have more lows, not less, than typical 15 boxes.

so not a guideline at all, unfortunately.

I have always played through 15's. I have recently considered moving to 10's

I played through a 4X10 cab the other day at GC and was surprised at how nice it sounded.

I play mostly 60's-70's classic Rock. Sabbath, Cream, Purple, Zep that era and some newer stuff too but a heavier focus on that stuff. I couldnt believe how nice it sounded through 10's. Then I mad the big mistake of playing through a 8X10 SVT

What bass are you using and with what strings? When I plug my old Warwick into most 10" or 12" spk cabs, it doesn't sound like a Warwick. But when it's played through 15" spkrs, no matter what brand, it sounds like what I paid for. Also, different basses with different strings can sound totally different played through the exact same gear. Is there a store near you where you can take YOUR bass and play it through cabs with different speaker sizes? Don't be afraid of the 5" spkr cabs like Phil Jones Bass. You might like them. Just try all the sizes with YOUR bass.

funny, I have a Ric and I never had a problem with its sound no matter what Amp I played through. My strings are 11 years old. I got a Mark Bass 1X15 a month ago and it sounds like crap for the most part through that amp. its been driving me crazy because that MB is a phenomenal amp. it just doesnt like the Ric...
