Speakers not Cabinets

Hi gang, I have heard that there are only a few manufacturers of bass speakers on the plant, and sometimes the speakers are rebadged with the cabinet manufactures nameplate. The only companies that come to mind are Eminence, Celestion, and JBL.

You have heard incorrectly.

Actually, there are about a dozen manufacturers of LF drivers in the industry, JBL is not one of them.

But the cab manufacturers get them tailored specifically for their cabs,

they're not off-the-shelf for us.

I think they make their own Hydrive speakers.

Often, making their own speakers means using a supplier that builds only to a company’s spec and do not have end use or retail packaged drivers. It may also mean assembled by a company from parts sourced from one of several possible vendors.

In the bass industry, the volumes are awfully small to support the tooling and machine costs associated with truly unique parts like cones and metalwork, though a few manufactures have in fact done this.

I have a cab from a small builder who designed the cab around an off-the-shelf driver.

I suppose it would be nice if they all did that, but that would limit what the cab builders could design.
