speakon cables:do they really make any difference

Aside from the current carrying capabilities and such, it only took one instance of the stage crew running the snake across the back of the stage and accidentally unplugging the 1/4" plug from the cabinet about 1/16" for me to make the change.

It was time to start and I went through some very tense 30 seconds wondering why my rig was mute and trying every other connection before finding the cause.

After that, I spent the $$ on a good speakon and have been happy (and secure) ever since...

With 1/4 plugs, if you have the amp on when inserting/removing the speaker cable it can cause a short.

Reason being, as you insert the cable the positive (tip) brushes across the negative before being seated. It can arc and cause a short. I have had amps go into protect mode when this happened to me. Luckily, I just had to power down and reset without any damage.

With a speakon, the positive and negative are not next to each other, and only connect to their respective counterparts in the socket.
