1/4 inches can get yanked out/bent in the jacks, they dont stand up to abuse well. Also speakons lock in place and handle large sums of power better. Sadly my cab has but one 1/4 inch jack.

Regular 1/4 plugs are a gnat's whisker thinner than Monster Cable plugs which give the Monster Cable a better connection.
So no one answered the question though, what does the gauge have to do with everything?
If this dimensional factoid is still true (once it was I know) it doesn't improve connections and it's been known to ruin inputs - IT SPREADS JACK CONTACTS so that reputable plugs by Switchcaft and Neutrik with for-decades-established industry standard dimensions have a slightly slack fit.

Thinking "cables are cables" is like thinking strings are strings or gas is gas.
let me rephrase that. a GOOD cable is a good cable.
For safety certification, Speakons are now mandatory on any power amplifier that is 300W or more. Many manufacturers including Peavey offer the "combi" type that has a 1/4" jack in the middle. If a company is one that certifies, they have to have the option of Speakons.
1/4" plugs heat up when used with higher power amplifiers because they have more resistance. Speakons handle more current than 1/4" jacks.
It can be dangerous to use 1/4" plugs with some class D amplifiers (not Peavey) that have bridged outputs because the negative side is not ground, it is a DC voltage that can be upwards of 50V, so if you touch the metal case of the 1/4" plug and the chassis at the same time, you get shocked. Since class D is becoming more popular, expect to see more Speakons.
1/4" plugs are responsible for many of the cases where power amplifiers blow because they can slip half way out due to vibration or even air pressure in the case of the speaker side. Most amplifiers have short protection, but that's never going to provide 100% protection.
I know this might be a tangent, but what about wire guages? I read about 12, 14, 16 guage wires. Can anyone tell me what those are about?
While I agree that speakons are better, there is one con to them that makes me prefer 1/4.They are superior in every regard to phone jacks. Get used to them - everyone will have to eventually!

When you are at the gig, it is often easier to just pull out the 1/4 from the jack rather than slide the connector up and twist the speakon to get it out.

Yes, but it does make 1/4s a tiny bit more convenient.

Gauge is not that important for short, <5 foot head to cab cables.
14AWG is more than fat enough. Any thinner just doesn't save enough money to make sense.
Pros of 1/4'' vs cons of Speak-On :
- price
- availability
- easy of connection & disconnection
- popularity / widespread use
- easier to store in many gigbags, etc that have pockets with no depth.
- no confusion between 2-way and 4-way +/- connectors
It's a real pain to have to now carry so many different speaker cables just in case you run into one type of connection or the other on various amps & cabs you may encounter. That's another con, since there'd be no need for this if Speak-Ons hadn't come along.
That isn't me saying Speak-Ons have no benefits or advantages depending on one's needs & preferences, it's justa bit of balance. Absolute statements such as 'better in every way' are as short-sighted and unhelpful as Monster's claims are obvious frauds.

The flip side of that is while I'm inserting a speakon during setup, I don't run the risk of accidentally trying to drive my speaker cab off of the head's line out or FX loop because I couldn't see which 1/4" I was groping for on the dimly lit stage. That's why I use speakon whenever possible.
Another thing I haven't seen mentioned yet...at no time with a speakon do you run the risk of shorting the amp's output to ground while plugging it in. A speakon's - terminal doesn't go anywhere near it's +.
Oh, yeah, another plus--no soldering required with a Neutrik Speakon. Strip the wires, tighten the terminal screws, and you're connected.
Its just not speed, but EASE of use.I could see that saving, oh, 50 milliseconds on my load-out time.
- price- Meh, the difference just isn't that big.
- availability - Every place I shop for quality connectors carries them.
- easy of connection & disconnection - really??? I never noticed. If you have the dexterity to play bass, you have plenty of dexterity for Speakons.
- popularity / widespread use - PA amps have all come with Speakons for 20 years. I don't use other peoples gear. I've long since added Speakons to any of my gear that didn't come with them.

- no confusion between 2-way and 4-way +/- connectors - I've never been even a little confused by 2/4 pole Speakons, or 1+, 2+ bridge wiring, for that matter.
If Speakons hadn't come along, there would still be a need for all this, because we'd still need Speakons to come along.
They're bulky, they're tricky, they cost a whole extra fiver, I have to RTM a little.
