Speakon Vs. 1/4" Pros & Cons

monster cable also markets a "bass instrument cable" that apparently has increased low end response. as i now know, that just means "decreased highend response". cables are cables. a cable cannot boost any frequencies.
All they do with it is coil the high freq wires around the low, since they travel at a faster rate & have them meet up @ the same point(as far as time it takes from instrument to amp). That's all it is

The signals travel at exactly the same speed. There is no difference in rate of propogation until you get up many thousands of times the highest frequency of audio. At that point, there are other entirely different mechanisms that come into play.

How does the cable know which signal to send to which wires?
 
I'm a speakon fan for sure. Never had a failure for the cable or more importantly, the socket. For me, I'm more impressed with the socket being secure than the cable. I've had so many 1/4 jacks get messed up. UGH! I can easily get a new cable, but it's a drag when my imputs are not working properly.
 
Ironicaly had a problem with a Speakon (4 wire style but only using +1 and -1)
Made a cable out of SO cord and Neutrick connectors that has always worked fine
Played the first set with a new to me LMII and a Berg cabinet; all went well
Picked up my bass for the 2nd set and no sound!
Turned out to be the speaker cable; of course the spare was in the trunk of the car and a guitar cable got me through the set
Disassembled the Speakon cable and all connections were tight

The speakon cable works fine in one direction but with it flipped, the amp side will drop out if wiggled; am assuming it is the connector but haven't look yet

Anybody have this problem
 
Jim C, maybe check the MarkBass threads. I could be mistaken but I vaguely recall others having some intermittent issues with the dual-purpose jacks on that amp.

Your post reminded me that the only speaker cable I have ever had a problem with over literally several dozen active bands & as many rigs, was a Speak-On of a very upscale brand and thick gauge.

Might have been using my LMII as well, in fact I'm almost certain, so possibly the cable was not to blame, but without the Speak-Ons there'd be no dual connectors so it's the same diff.
 
Thanks SMASH; hate to say it but was thinking that I'd just use a 1/4" jack instead of spending the $$ to have the amp looked at; haven't opened the top but have got to think that even a bum output jack is no easy fix on a micro
 
JimC, it might not be a repair issue, but an issue of using a 4-pin or perhaps non-Neutrik connector. That rings a bell. I think mine was Neutrik thoguh. Whatever, good ol' 1/4'' works perfect and fits easily into the slim side pocket of the bag I carry the amp in.
 
My cabinet doesn't yet have a speakon so I use one of these to hook it up my Shuttle 6.0

Be careful using an adapter cable like this with ANY amp that uses a full bridge output section. The shell is not at ground potential and damage could result if it touches any grounded part of the signal chain (like the amp's chassis, another piece of rack gear, a metal cased power strip, quad box etc.

Don't shoot the messenger, it's what I've been told. If this is incorrect, please let me know what IS right so I can further relay the information.

I suggest taking a basic EE class and not believing everything a dishonest company tells you.

I can admit when I don't know something. Sorry I believe somebody when they tell me something I don't know, when they(theoretically) know more than I. And seeing as I'd rather learn what is correct than be wrong, I'm NOT your average GC associate.

Or even a guitar cable with a metal shell. Accidentally drop a grounded cable on that one... zaaaaap!
