Cool. Besides cranking the TP up some what was the EQ like on your GK? I crank up the high and low mids to get the growl I'm after. I generally run the bass flat or cut just a tad for more of a mid bump too.

using the 1001rbii

volume:
contour: 1 o'clock
presence: 4-5 o'clock
high: 11 o'clock
high mid: noon
low mid: 2 o'clock
low: 9-10 o'clock
boost: all the way baby!

I manage the volume with the woofer knob

on my bass both pups 100% treble 90% bass 10-30% (I adjust depending on the song.

I noticed Rex runs his EQ almost flat and cuts the lows. The SVT 810 cabs are naturally voiced for low and low mid and my GK head is different than his SVT 4 Pro, but I'm really happy, and having cut through 2 100watt tube half stacks now I'm tweaking my live tone a little bit.

Only 5's for me also, I used the b string on almost everything I play.
Plus I'm lazy, I don't have to dance all over the neck with a 5.
If I ever had to go back to a 4 (can't imagine), I would string it BEAD.

lol. funny i find it lazy for me to have a 4. no extra stretching for that b.

I still like both but I feel more free on a four. Less restrained. Mostly because physically I don't have to worry about keeping the b string quiet. I'm just faster on a four because of that, especially for slapping. Once i have all of my basses, I'm still contemplating tuning one of them BEAD. Spectors, even just the 34" scale, do BEAD great. The 35lx4 models obviously get it a little better in terms of clarity, but all the regular scale neck through spectors I've heard strung BEAD sound amazing. If I try it put and really get into it I could probably be talked into selling the 5lx. Sell off that and the JAR, use the forte 4 as BEAD and the Wimbish neck lx4 standard. But then I'm afraid I'd end up with a GAS attack. Yeah, this is a dangerous and stupid train of thought.

If you think about it, you are stretching almost as far because the nut is only about a 1/4 wider, divide that between all the strings because the spacing is smaller, unless Spector uses less spacing between the strings on a 4 string than normal?

I think most 4 bangers have 19mm string spacing. The 5ers I've played have 17.5mm or so. It takes a little getting used to for sure. I too, find it harder to slap on narrower spacing. The convenience of hand position on a 5er is most important. I hardly use the notes below E, although, I have to admit, when I first started playing a 5er, I tried to incorporate the lower notes into everything, lol!

I bought my first 5er 3 years ago, after playing 4 exclusively for 20 years. At first, I didn't even know what to do with the 5er. Well, actually, I traded it (Carvin) for a Euro5LX! About a year ago, I joined a band, and all the songs are in A or B, so it's a perfect fit. Now, I'm as comfy with the 5er as with my NS4CR. I just needed a context.

- tune BEAD on a 34" scale 4

- tune BEAD and intentionally purchase a 35" four string specifically for that purpose?

Now that i have both 4 and 5 i use them both the 5 is heavier so will play 4 more often . Where do i get a caliper to measure neck ? My euro feels thinner than my ns2a...

I have some real expensive calipers but I usually grab those cheap plastic calipers you can get from Harbor Freight, they would work perfect for what you want to do.

yeah definitely a bead on a 4 string. that would be my ideal for the "downtuning". gas attack for sure. now you have me thinking about this

im not really sure, but i wouldnt assume so.

i cant slap for crap so it doesnt matter to me about that i did the same thing when i was on a 5er. i would be like "well it ends in b or c so i'll hit it down here". sounds good at the end of a song when you do that though

yep. just comes natural when you use it for that, i think. so that would then justify a 4 banger tuned bead.

ive honestly can say ive never played a 35" scale. but from what ive heard, 35" 4 banger tuned bead. for sure

Played around some more with the track I've been working on... the drum programming is VERY unconventional, basically some random snare kick and hi hat MP3's and I pasted them on the timeline...tediously I might add!!!

Much to my dismay, I find I am more comfortable on four strings, having said that I guess I will be posting two rebop fives I recently acquired. One is that red with upgraded EMG DCs and the BQC preamp, and the other is the natural with HZs and a non trim tone pump and the upgraded black euro bridge with intonation screws. If anyone is interested in either message me. I might consider trading both for a nice Spector four. The red is a 2001, while the natural is a 2003. I have a Spector hardshellL with the upgraded 2001.

Yeah...I went back and forth, back and forth between 4's & 5's for 3 years. I'd even take both with me to my Sunday morning church band. I'd play the 4 a couple songs, switch to the 5 for the lower noted songs, then jump back to the 4. Then I said to myself, this is nuts...I don't have a roadie to hand me my equipment in between songs and we generally roll right into the next song right away with no break. So I finally said enough is enough...a 5 can do everything a 4 can do and more. So I decided to go with 5's all the way!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with being a 4-string guy. I played 5-ers for almost four years, and they never did feel quite right to me. I rarely need anything lower than a low D, so I keep my white Euro in drop-D for the one set we have in that tuning. A nice Spector 4 should be a very satisfying addition to your toolbox.

I play low C & D regularly and sometimes I drop tune A.
Plus...I love the feel of the wider FB in my large hands & long fingers.

4's 4 life!

Down the road I'll buy a NS-2...just because THAT'S the "Holy Grail".

+1 brother! I had a NS-2A I converted to BEAD. it worked ok but...I like the 35" scale more than the 34". The B string is my bench mark string then I scale from there.

I used to play a 5er ( not a spector) and I much prefer 4 strings. The 34" scale does just find for as much as I down tune.

Of the three, I would tune BEAD and intentionally purchase a 35"-scale four string Spector Euro specifically for that purpose.

Absolutely. LaBella has a string set for drop-tuning, and I string with them, so that I can tune down as needed.

This would be my preference also...........if I had the spare cash to buy another bass specifically for this purpose, if I did not have the money I would use either a five or detune another four...........

I keep my Rebop 5 tuned down a full step and if I need to, I can go down another half step without any problems. I probably want to get some thicker strings though because anything lower than that and things start to get a bit floppy so I was thinking about trying some Circle K's and seeing how they are.

Currently, I am using D'Addarrio nickel strings since they make a .145 B string that is tapered and a .110 as my E string but I think I need to go thicker than that so i can get down to drop C and B if I need to. I am thinking about a .158 for my B string just in case since the bolt ons tend to not have as much string tention when I tune down. At least, that is what I have notices when tuning down my basses is the neck thru's seem to handle lower tunings without getting as floppy.
