To anyone wondering or worried about having to widen the pot holes in your Spector when installing a new pre, I just found the perfect tool. I am in the process of installing an EMG BQC into my NS-JH5 and when I removed the existing OBP-1, I realized that the existing holes for the pots were not wide enough for the 2 stacked pots for the BQC.

Sam and I ran into this issue before with my blue Euro 5LX when he installed the BQC in that but I used a Dremel to widen the holes that time and I really didn't like doing that. I did some research online and several people were suggesting to use a tapered reamer to widen the holes. I ran over to my local Ace Hardware and picked one up for $20 (you can find it much cheaper online) and tried it out immediately when I got home. WOW! This is the way to go! It took me probably 2 minutes per hole to widen them and I couldn't believe how easy it was. The holes are perfect too so if anyone is looking to install either a BQC or even a 9V USA Circuit and the pot holes are not wide enough, this is definitely the way to go. Here is what it looks like:

That's a good price for a JAR. Somebody should grab it if they have the money since they are really nice basses. When Limaguy had his, I always loved the tone on that bass but when he decided to sell it, I didn't have the money unfortunately. My NS-JH5 can do J/J now though so I have that area covered.

Hahahaha. It's so funny you say that though because when I walked into the store, the guy asked me if I needed any help and I told him I was just looking around :) I just couldn't ask him to point me in the direction of the tapered reamers :D

Another case option - the Gator hardshell:

It's available from several stores (MF, GC, etc.). At less than $100, this thing is a steal. It has a pad that pushes against the strings, preventing your bass from moving around in the case.

I inherited one when I traded a Carvin Icon5 for a Euro5 a few years ago; I instantly fell in love with that case. I sold the case with the Euro5 when I bought my Webster, and I bought a new Gator hardshell case for the AW, too.

I have the same case line but for one of my guitars. Quality case for sure.

People rip on ebay a lot on here, but I have used it for used gear for years, and only a problem once...
It's just like buying anything, you gotta hold out for numerous detailed pics and ask questions of the seller (if they don't respond to your questions,or sound wayyyy to excited or eager but don't give you all the info you asked for, it is a good sign that you should walk away), I've got some really amazing deals out there, you just have to know who to avoid, and how to spot someone who doesn;t know what they are talking about or are omitting certain areas of the instrument in the pics.

The one problem I had I bought a Japanese lawsuit copy of the Explorer bass there were some decent pics but some main areas of normal damage were not shown in the pics, so when I got it it was pretty thrashed but it sounded great so I stuck with it. Oddly comfortable too with the strap button on the neck plate.

All my Spectors aside from teh NS-2A Jaymi sold me have come from ebay.

Problem solved...
I wasn't overly thrilled with the sound from my new (to me) Euro 4LX. It just was either too boomy or too bright almost nothing inbetween and entirely too loud even on the lowest of volume settings. Because it was equipped with the non-trimpot tonepump I assumed it just needed a preamp upgrade. I was all ready to pull the trigger on a 9volt USA preamp then heard about an 18volt trimpot tonepump option that I thought might work.
While thinking it over I decided spend a little more time with the Euro and slap a new set of strings on it.
Off went the Cobalts, very articulate strings but too much finger grip and noise and the D string kept hanging in the nut while tuning. On went some Elixer Nano's and fine tuning the set up and action.
Then I noticed it. Someone had plugged my instrument cable into the passive jack on my GK MB210 practice amp. Moved it to the active jack and bingo, solved the boomy problem. The nano strings sound and feel fantastic, first time I've used them so we'll see how they hold up, but liking them much better than the cobalts so far, really nice on slides, little to no finger noise yet just a articulate and agressive as the cobalts if you dig in.
I'll give it another week to see if I need the 18volt tonepump upgrade or the 9volt USA upgrade, but for now all is well in this Spector household.

Thanks for the PRO tip on the reamer advice for my bass,ive been looking for such a tool to help with future mods!

Gabriel said my new NS 20005 is a 35in scale,Ive had a BUNCH of Spector 5strings and believe the NS 2000 series to be 34inches from nut to saddle....Am i wrong?
Either way,im digging this bass(Reminds me of D.Wimbish's 5string tone on Stain)....alot!
Does anyone know what EMG pre the NS 20005 have stock in them?

Yep. Great price. It figures that just when I'm about to list my white JAR for sale a bunch of them come out of the woodwork...
