SPECTOR® Club - Part 49

Well lads, after 3 years of work work wok, I am off on my first well deserved vacation!!
I am leaving Thursday with my wife to Chile where we'll spend early December in Easter Island and then the rest of the month in the Atacama Desert and the Andes around Santiago.
My wife then flies back home late Dec. and I am off to Southern Patagonia to do a few treks in the Patagonian Andes for another 6 weeks.
I'll be spending some time in El Chalten, Argentina (one of my favourite places), Torres Del Paine (my 4th time now...) and making my way up through the Chilean Carretera Austral back to Santiago and fly back home to Vancouver.

I will try to keep in touch as much as possible, though part of this trip is to disconnect from technology. Unfortunately, I will miss playing a lot...I already miss my basses and playing with the band. This is the only bummer for me really. I will truly miss it!!!!!

I encourage everyone to do an image search of the places mentioned above....simply stunning. Southern Patagonia is one of the most pristine places I've ever been to.

Take care everyone and play your Spectors a bit extra for me!

And to think I had a hard time getting my wife to ride the chair to the top of Alpental.:D

Have a great time on your trek. Now I have two things I envy about you, your basses and your travel. Live large for the guys like me that don't get to travel like yourself.......And don't forget to drop a photo every now and then when you get somewhere you have internet.

Painting and fully refinishing my basement so my 17 year old can move into the basement as my newborn has taken his room. Great vacation!

Of course the new music room in the "bassment" is approx 400sq/ft.:hyper::bassist:

Amazing indeed! Have some great and safe travels!!!

I must admit I am a tad jealous. My current is 2 weeks vacation, which basically negates any international stuff. I have given very serious consideration to getting out of the "corporate world" and into teaching. I know the pay can suck and you spend plenty hours grading papers at home, etc. however, the time off to travel, focus on family and music and health is very appealing. Plus, I really feel unfulfilled in my career.

I am a teacher. I work TWO full time jobs to support my family of 4. I've been teaching for almost 20 years now. I NEVER get a full summer off as I have to work.

I wish I had ONE big corporate job! The grass is not greener on the other side.........trust me!

And no.......I'm not bitter.......but I've seen better days!

I'll play devil's advocate...

let me preface by stating that I am single and have only one awesome puppy to take care of. :D

I was working in the business/retail world all thru college. After I graduated and couldn't find full time work in the recording industry, I decided to go into teaching.

I taught middle school music on a transitional license while in my Master's program. It was the best work experience of my life! After my first year, there was a shift in the district and being the low man of the totem pole I got let go. I am now back in the business world (working at an HVAC distributor) making half of what I was making as a teacher and getting only 5 personal and 5 vacation days a year. In my present company, I, the least paid position in the company, does the majority of the work (80%), get none of the praise and all of the blame. It sucks!

As of January, I will be back in school to do a semester of student teaching in K-6 so I can finally get back into teaching.

I understand that it is not for everyone, but I found that I enjoyed teaching heads and shoulders above any retail/business job I have worked. When I was teaching, I not only taught music, but spent the last class of the day tutoring students in math (which is my most hated subject) and I loved every minute of it!

Besides the fact that I can pay pay my bills, barely, I currently can not find anything positive to say about my current work situation... :)

Seems like we all wish upon things we don't have... Travel in my opinion is important and so I've adjusted my life to accommodate things as these once in a while.
Not having kids, a mortgage or any other big financial obligations allow me to do this. But on the other hand, one could say that I am missing out on kids and a home.... so everything balances out I guess :)

Thanks again and I will keep in touch indeed!!! I'll try to upload some photos as I go!

I did not say I did not like it.....lol. It's just not a job that pays well financially! It pays in self rewards and satisfaction. I might note that I am a special education teacher....lol

Well...I thought it was better in USA than in Russia regarding this. Actually from all the above I can say it's the same. I'm a teacher by Diploma but I had to pass it due to low salaries of teachers in Russia, I've worked as a teacher for 3 months, I liked it, I enjoyed teaching languages to kids but...had to go into corporate FMCG world which I actually hated but did it to support my living and buy my first bass (it was Ibanez that time :)) And I'm still in this industry, many bands has passed which I've been into, but the only thing which never changed since I graduated college is this f...g business. Sad but true...Never mind.:bassist:

Although I will say living in the Pacific NW does offer a lot of short vacation spots in relatively remote areas. Personally I love the snow & trees in the Cascades either on my Mtn. bike or snowboard. Kind of my home away from home.
