SPECTOR® Club - Part 60

I have heard that the parts/construction in each circuit (Brooklyn/Kramer/Woodstock) are the same...therefore the only REAL difference between the older and newer circuits is age, right?

I wonder if the newer US 9v circuits be similar to the old Brooklyn/Kramer era basses in 20+ years...anyone else have any thoughts on this theory??

I had a Mesa M9 and as much as I loved it am not missing it at all compared to the TH500. The TH500 delivers fat, chewy, warm tone with super complexity in the mids. It is not an amp you set at noon. There is a very complex relationship between the mid controls, gain and drive. If you don't take time to figure that out then you might become disenchanted.

Every person's ear is different for sure.

there's a few components that have changed over time due to going obsolete, the 9v is in its 4th or 5th config I believe. Changes have been minor but damn if Stu and Haz didn't hit it one the head long ago. genius!

very cool!! I knew they were VERY similar! I can see how technological advances have played a role in the minor changes!

I am still curious to see if age, wear and usage will affect the tone of the pre...I guess only time will tell.

I agree that Stuart and HazLabs nailed it from the start! :bassist:

I have a couple new 9v's I would gladly trade someone for a older circuit if you are not happy.

Here's another way to look at it. Can we all agree that Mr. Stuart Spector probably has a pretty good ear?

Well, he lets Aguilar amps into all the Spector booths at shows for people to play through. You think if they sounded like crap that would be happening?:hiding:

BTW, your tone was incredible the other night but that has nothing to do with the TH500. What I really meant be the "you hate it, I love it" deal is you like those really big, deep and wide lows and a clean tone overall. The Tone Hammer is not that. It's more of a vintage thump with rolled off/muted highs. Sure it will do highs but not in the same manner as, say, a GK MB800 or Mesa M6/9. I prefer more of a dirty/gritty tone and the Tone Hammer does that very early on in the gain structure. That's all I really meant. No offense intended.

I'm rebutting Lee........the TH500 has too much hype. The controls depend too much on each other and affect each other..........KISS......keep it simple........not well if you crank this knob you're gonna need to tweek this........I have NEVER liked that kind of shelving or "active" amplifier tone controls........not MY thing.....

Lee is right.....he will razz me to the end about that.........."when I hear you hated it...........i knew it was for me man.........." LOL Yep..........keep it, it's all yours! LOL

But I love Lee like that.........he's honest........and he knows how to hit someone with a joke and can take back what you throw at him! The man is way cool!

PS-I like Kramer era NS-2's..........especially a blue warhorse...........ALOT;););););););););)

Now that I seem to have sorted it out I thought I would put it up here, answered a Craigslist ad for spector bass, no info, no price, after speaking with the owner I found out he was the original owner of an 87 ns2a, bass was in rough shape with what appeared to be a neck twist, ended up getting it for $100, contacted Sam with some pic and his observations were the bass badly needed a setup, truss rod works fine, I loosened it, removed the old strings and just let it hang for a couple of weeks, gave it a good cleaning and followed Sams instructions for setting it up and seem to have a pretty good playing bass, action is not too bad, gotta keep tweaking it, even came with a hsc,, sorry for the long post, sometimes there are deals out there.

I have never had a chance to play either of them, but hopefully I'll be lucky enough to own an older one as a newer Woodstock to give them both a whirl!

From the recordings that Omer has posted on FB, I think the Spalt/Walnut combo is pretty nasty! :bassist: ...in the best way possible! :D

Between the cat hair all over the case and the musty smell when I opened it I almost walked away but figured worth it for the parts alone, glad I didn't, after cleaning it is in pretty nice shape, you moving anywhere near tampa, I'm a little north of there
