SPECTOR® Club - Part 60

Which again is a really funny story. That color was supposed to be more like the Peacock Blue... a true teal color. And it turned out almost army-drab green.

So not sure what's up with that color naming. But Stuart's reaction to seeing it the first time was funny.

He held the bass up and looked at Jimmy Eppard (who does the stains) and said, "I thought this was supposed to be teal."

And Jimmy's response was, "Oh yeah, I meant to tell you the new teal formula is green."

LOL. Stuart was almost not wanting to show the bass at the NAMM Show but PJ and I jumped in and said, "Oh no! Green is hot. It'll be a big hit."

And John's green NS-5XL was actually the most popular bass at that NAMM Show.

Before the end of the first day Sam Cerami had called me saying that John wanted to buy it... just based on photos he'd seen.

Great story. And John has good taste - the "Great Gazoo" is one fantastic looking Spector for sure. :bassist:

I had a conversation with PJ Rubal this morning about Redwood Burl.

I got a really nice email from Stuart complimenting me on the composite photo of my Water Cured Redwood NS-4.

Sam Cerami and anyone else with one of those rare models made with the WCR can attest that really nothing quite shows off how amazing the grain is.

But I really gave it my best college effort. And I was really pleased that Stuart was very happy with the end result.

This led to a conversation with PJ about the Water Cured Redwood models and how much I (as a personal preference) love that wood. It's the most amazing, beautiful, tonal wood I've ever seen or heard.

And yes, more composite Spector photos are in the works.

I shot a Holoflash Rex model recently and did this same thing. Holoflash is another finish that's nearly impossible to photograph and show how cool it is.

I was wondering, since the wood used in a bass has much to do with tone... How is my USA that's on order with solid maple body going to differ from the Euro I have now that's poplar burl backed by alder with a thin slice of rosewood in between? Can I expect a weight difference along with tone?

My USAs do weigh a tad more than my Euros, but it shouldn't be enough of a difference to notice when they are strapped on.

Yes. The solid maple bodies are slightly heavier.

The Euros have a slice of Walnut in the center, not rosewood, just FYI...

And yes, the tone should be different, but not too much so.

One variable that sort of evens everything out is the high-gloss finish. That is if your USA is going to have the high-gloss finish.

Walnut, yes. I stand corrected. It was a Jazz I just sold that had a slice of rosewood between a walnut back and Koa front. Speaking of Koa, Spector ever use it in a bass? I had the Jazz and BC Rich Mockingbird and still have a Modulus all with Koa. Beautiful wood especially the flamed.

Well I am getting ready to head out for a couple shows this weekend. The CRFM & Euro are still my go to basses. We have some things in the works and there will be some touring coming up, hopefully we can make it out east by the end of the year.

On a side note, I did some tweaking..the Jade CRFM is now running the TP at 80%. the Euroburst is running the TP at 60% bypassing the volume pot and only running the P pickup. I call it "ode to Iceboxbass" cause he is always talking about wanting a Spector "P" bass.. ;)

I can't wait to see the holoflash pics!

I just received my black and teal Spectorcore4 from Amazon.com. It's a beautiful green color with great quilting but will sadly be going back to Amazon. It was advertised as a 24 fret Spectorcore4 but unfortunately someone forgot to tell Amazon when you advertise a bass as 24 fret it ought to at least have some frets on it, this one is fretless. It'd does sound and look fantastic but I already have a fretless bass and don't need another.

Just for reference, this fretless bass has a wonderful mwah factor that rivals my favorite fretless - the Pedulla Pentabuzz. But again, not what I'm looking for right now, so back it goes. Maybe better luck next time.

Lesson learned, don't buy basses from distributors that don't have a clue on how to properly advertise their products.

Haha, ode to Ice! Nice.

Man, I hope you guys make it out this way. If you are anywhere CLOSE to Virginia, I'm there.
