I've found that SoungForge is as powerful as ProTools, more affordable and I can run it on my i7 - 6-core Windows 64 bit system... and not have to use Macs anymore.
I've been using Cakewalk Sonar for over a decade. I went with it because it was one of the few software hosts that was written specifically for Windows instead of being a port.
I've always had pretty good luck with it. In the past few years stuff like Reaper and Studio One have come out which I believe are pretty Windows friendly as well.

Now, what do you use for bringing audio/midi into your USB port? For my dedicated sampler I'm using the PreSonus AudioBox 22VSL. Is there anything better?
