Thanks alot guys! UPS has it now and I'll get it on Tuesday. I'll be taking it out to an open mic night at a local club and get it on stage right away.
I find it interesting that the bass was signed by Stuart a few week BEFORE my NS-5XL.
Sometimes the options like Chrome and the availability of the 9v Haz parts makes a delivery plan a little messed up I guess...but...at least they got it on the road and heading your way buddy!!!! Looks very nice Jeff...dang!
NICE! We need to see some more pics! You are absolutely correct that it's an enormous pain in the neck to source replacement Schaller M4s with those downturned screw holes. (As you're looking at the back of the neck with the body towards the floor, they're positioned at 6:00 or pointed down.)
Luckily, the Gotoh GB7s are about as close as a direct replacement as I've been able to find. They're inexpensive and easily sourced. There's the added bonus that those are the stock tuners on the US Spectors so you know the quality is there.
The one caveat is that the posts on the Gotohs are just a bit bigger so it is necessary to ream out the pegholes slightly. I wrote about this a few threads ago. Let me see if I can dig that up. I have a stupidly expensive reaming tool from stewmac that I'm happy to lend/ship out for my Spector brethren (or if you're local to the Boston area, just come over. This is about a two beer project.) The beers offset the ass-puckering feeling as you're carving into your Euro.
bobunit put up a great pic of the green one. As you can tell, it's not exactly bookmatched but when the quilt is that gorgeous, who cares? I've had a number of bassists tell me that it's the nicest looking Euro they've ever seen so there's validation in abundance, lol. The Euro 4 appearance-wise is just your garden variety blueburst Euro. Ubiquitous like a tan Toyota Camry. The flame/grain pattern is hardly as impressive as on the 5 but it's solid maple so it's all good. I'd love to refinish the 4 but I priced a refin for a neck through at a few places online and it's a little out of my range. The bass still rules nonetheless and the black hardware conversion should give it a cleaner look.
Considering the prospect of having to buy nine tuners in total, the GB7s will definitely be the ones I reach for. Having used Gotohs on other basses in the past I can say they won't be a downgrade from the Schallers and at less than half the price of Hipshot Ultralites, I've made my choice. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll PM you when the time gets near for the project. I live on the other side of the state so the operation should run smoothly. A horrifying prospect having to go the reamer option
but I'll just repeatedly remind myself about the savings as I tear into the headstock flesh, lol.

That's because the neck is signed after the neck is completed...not the bass completion.

+1! I'm with you on that those, including the NS-2A, which I've had as well. I've had the pleasure of owning the NS-95, NS-2000/5 as well. Amazing basses! And they all had very low string action. The NS-95 was my second 5 string Spector and that I was thoroughly impressed with overall.

For sure. Glad to talk you through it (and to drop the reamer into the mail whenever you're ready). It's not for the faint of heart but it's straight-forward. I realized after the fact that I probably should have practiced a bit with the tool before scrubbing in just to get a feel for it. I'd recommend drilling some holes in a piece of scrap wood just to practice before you cut loose on the Euro. I felt more comfortable with it by the end of the project (figures).
Im really loving the Hartke Kilo. Its a bit low on power (because Im running a single channel right now) But it gets a great gritty tone.
