Much of this is the producer too. When it comes to high level session work, it's not that the engineer can't mix other basses, it's more like the producer and/or engineer "feel" that the sound of a Fender bass is what works best. Very subjective and can be simply rooted in habit. But if you're being paid to lay bass tracks for someone it's their call. IMHO

That being said, if you are in the studio to record your own material then hell yeah, it's your sound and insist on it.

Oh, totally. If I'm doing session work & they want a Fender, I have no issues with that. But if it's my own band, screw them. lol They're getting 100% Me.

DUDE I know exactly what you mean. I had several arguments with our producer/engineer. But at least he preferred to have an active bass played with a pick for recording lol

Donny, I have literally told the engineer to get up and I'll show you what I want. I'm paying dammit (or our investors ). Didn't make a friend but I got my sound. And it was good.

I love it, I would send him certain songs I like the bass mix... Godsmack was one especially since Robbie plays a Spector.

My producer's/engineer's argument...... "have you sold 5 million records?" ugg I hate that crap lol

You should have asked him if he's engineered records that have sold "5 million records" ...if not, his opinion is in valid, IMO.

As someone who studied audio engineering in college, I approach it the same way I approach being a bassist for hire. If it's MY project then it's MY call....if I'm hired to record a band, it's definitely their call. I might suggest something else, but ultimately it's the decision of the people cutting the check! ...just my 2 cents!

What are you using for a compressor? I've been trying to find one I like, but always strike out because they're never responsive enough & always lag behind on processing.

Honestly, this "standard" needs to change. Engineers go to school to manipulate sound. They should be able to work with any bass, not just a P. I absolutely hate when sound techs ask me to bring a P-bass. It's MY sound. I get to dictate how it is.

Everyone who has heard my Spector NS2 basses like them (and they are digging the Pau Ferro board big time), most of my friends who have recorded have also said that a lot of studios use a Spector or have one around so they can use it if needed. There is the standard sound that the Engineers seem to want and in my case it is my place to provide a variation of these sounds similar to the different techniques we are discussing...this sometimes includes my P-Bass sound. If it's my show/band then it's my call to play what I want, if I get asked to play with someone and they request a sound then I will provide it the best I can is what I'm saying....

Good for you Jeff...in that case, the engineer is the 'hired gun' and it's his job to get the band the sounds that THEY want

His argument doesn't even make sense...Godsmack HAS sold 5 million records (which I'm sure he hasn't) and you're asking him to emulate an obviously successful sound :scowl:

I feel the same way. They're hiring you for what you do, in my experience people hear the bass with their eyes. I have actually recorded the same line twice with the same bass and told them one was a P bass, they fell for it of course. I never told them. I'm not proud of it ubt I just had to prove it to myself.

Carey, if you run the blend on the Paradriver at 100% they say it imparts a certain amount of compression. Whether it's enough is up to you.

I run the blend at 100% and it's enough for me, everyone likes the sound of the ParaDriver so all Jeremy has to do is play with whats going into the room (which is a very big, round, dome). I stand on the stage right over the cabinet that has the lows which allows me to feel everything I'm doing! weehee

Most Engineers can record any bass like you have said, it's just a choice they might have for the given song...I agree with your statement Jeff....and, to tell the truth it's no different for me because I'm very much interested in seeking out the Spector P-Bass sound and love my Fender P-Bass.

Absolutely true, I had the same conversation with some folks around here several months ago; LOTS of people listen with their eyes.

Fortunately for me, whenever someone tells me to bring a Fender to a gig or session I just show up with my Coda

Would you know which Aguilar pickup they put in the Coda P-Bass, I would think that it's an AG4P-60 because it was designed after the 60's P-bass?

You can have any P pickup you'd like if you order one, but the two at NAMM had the Aguilar HOT pickups and sounded absolutely killer.

hah, no he actually has sold 5 million records. He is a very accomplished producer and drummer. Most notably he drummed for Alice Cooper and House of Lords and has worked on Alice cooper, Beach Boys and Megadeath albums, lol

Just an aside statement but a sound engineer who learned much of the trade while being our (Della Street) soundman touring in the early 90's is now Alice Cooper's FOH engineer. He has learned well.
