Well, I've spent a few days with my new-to-me Euro 5 LX now.
I love the playability, and I like the tone with the boost-only tone pump (non-trim) set to no boost at all. I'm not really liking that preamp though. It just seems... way off balance. This could largely be part of me being used to have 4 bands on board (Bass/ Lo-Mid / Hi-Mid / Hi) on my Bongos. I'll give it a few more days, especially since right now getting a Haz clone is out of the picture (parts or availability just isn't there right now).

What I don't want to do is change the basic tone I'm getting from this thing as-is. But, I want to change the pre, probably to one of the Haz clones. Anyone have any input?
How much are you wanting to spend?

/shrug. Money isn't generally a factor for me. I can't go out and blow $500 on a preamp or $5k on a US NT like I want :). But if it's like $150-$200 for a pre, sure (especially since I can/will install myself, so no tech fees or anything). Of course, the less I can get away with, the better. There's a used haz clone here on TB for what seems to be really cheap, but I don't know if it'll fit in my control cavity.

The NAMM event presented a Tone Capsule that you might give a listen, Duff2 was building a Haz copy and might have one still available plus he is capable of trimming it to help the fit...others have routed areas to fit the Korean Haz and/or MM circuit....

I've seen references to someone who did a TonePump versus Haz sound clip, but I can't find the actual sound clip. I think that would help me decide a bit.
I'm also going to make an 18v harness for this just to see what that does. I don't feel my issue has anything to do with headroom, so I'm not too hopeful. However, that's easy for me to throw together to test while I figure out which pre I can/will get.

You might consider the new Tonepump. It has an output trim, and it is boost/cut. Mostly boost. It's a whole different animal than the old version.

Would that be this one?

It's still labeled as boost only?

I just saw that they offer the US 18V preamp right there too. "Sold out", though.

That's the one.
Smarter guys than me can chime in on this, but there was a lot of discussion on this, and my understanding was that it does actually cut. Despite what the website says. I could definitely be wrong though.

Sweet. For $100, it's a no-brainer. I'll give that a whirl.

I just got done trying out the 18v mod with the TonePump in mine. It didn't seem to really do much to change my mind on it. Definitely changed it, but not favorably for me. I'll probably get that new TonePump and the first Haz copy I can get my hands on. Worst thing that happens is I use one of these pres in another bass... so no real loss.

Selta, I'll have my Haz equipped Euro 4LX at the next Seattle GTG if you want to compare against the TP. Also the newer version of the TP sounds pretty good and for 100 bones a great deal. I liked it in the White NS2A I had at last years GTG although I preferred the MM114 Haz clone by just a hair.

Ooooh, that'll be nice and handy. I think the P/Js in those will be a far cry from the 40DCs, but I should be able to make a judgement call off of it. In the meantime, I'll drop the "new" TonePump in it. If that gets me what I want, I'll be happy enough with it. I'm not looking to radically alter the tone of this, just make the pre a little more useful for me.
Now, I just need to start actually getting in gear about the GTG this year. I'm so far behind the 8 ball.

Back to the music...one of these days I completed (as I believe now) my pedalboard with TWA Great Divide 2.0 synth-octave and made a short demo with my ForteSS. This thing sounds really nasty on its own and a bit more friendly if followed by some envelope filter, in my case it is paired with 3Leaf Wonderlove. So here it is.

Man, this really makes me want a Great Divide!

Full disclosure. This Sunday my band was going to record video of our live performance for one Russian TV channel that is well known for its pro-Putin and anti-America background. The name of the channel is Life News. Our band was invited for a live gig on TV....I did not like the idea from the very beginning as I am opposition to current government but I made a decision that it will be my personal "Stalingrad" battle and I will use the situation on purpose. I have quite a lot t-shirts with USA flag so I prepared one for this occasion on purpose. Imagine how would I look playing bass wearing USA flag t-shirt on this cannel, right :D?
This was the plan and it has changed. Now I'm boycotting this performance. No f..g way I ever step in their rooms.

Stay safe Anton!

Have you spoken to Duff2? He has/had a few HAZ clones that he is selling.
He has a posting in the classifieds here for them.
I have one in a Euro that I bought from him and another that i will be putting in my other Euro after a refinishing.
Highly recommended! If any are left!

OK guys. Time to put the Geezers in the Mike Starr bass. I get on All parts and and all the specs make wonder what works for the bass. I've decided to go with 250K since the TP offers plenty of high end to roll on if needed. I'm just ignorant of shaft height, etc. I'll need split shafts so I can keep using the knobs. I think I need a little help from my Spector bros with electronics savvy on my choice of volume and blend pots. Yes, I'm converting to V/B from V/V because that's what I'm used to.

Think I could get a couple links to what I should buy? Or a full description of the specs for V/B pots that fit a Spector Euro? I apologize for my ignorance on these matters.

Thanks in advance for all your help!
Jeff,
Check out Potentiometers - Pots | Jacks | Switches | Shielding
From what I understand you need a 250K Blend pot & a 500K Volume pot (which is the sum of the 2 blends) So you will need the 6th & 14th pots counting down from the top.
These also have the split shafts with the grooves so the original knobs will fit right on.
