Yeah, the NS-2A was passive, the one I had in the late 90's was until I put the hazcopy in it.
I know Kramer says they were active but, no preamp in the I bought at the time.

Na....every NS-2A I have ever owned had preamps in them, and I have 3 of them right here
. You mustve gotten one that had the preamp removed. Now the Kramer NS-2C (bolt-on) was completely passive.

Adding an additional 9v should help a lot. You shouldn't have any issues stuffing another battery in the control cavity.
I'm gonna try it tomorrow with just placing a spare battery in there but the cavity is pretty small. Is there a harness that I could install that would hold two of the batteries?

Just stating that the only completely passive Spector, to my knowledge (Kramer to present day), was the NS-2C (I have a couple of those too and love 'em). Did you buy your NS-2A new? That would be truly bizarre to find an NS-2A that came from the factory without a preamp.

I must admit, I didn't think these came with a Haz, but he says it's original. I'm guessing that if it is original, it's the genuine article as this bass would come with active EMG's. To my knowledge none of the Haz copies came with 25Kohm pots to properly accommodate active EMG's.
Not all Haz boards are identical. They've changed over the years somewhat. I know the Haz in my Kramer era USA NS2 looked different than yours.I'm wondering if it's a haz copy. even though it's a green board, the circuitry on the ebay bass certainly looks different than my haz preamp.

Sorry Phat & BobUnit but personally I put it in the same category as a NS-2A. So in saying that, the majority on this SPECTOR club won't pay more than $350-500.00 for an older NS-2A in very good condition. This bass, IMO, falls short of the very good condition but more in the fair condition. I realize it has the rare SSD case with it but that bass has seen better days and without being able to play it or inspect it in my hands...NO WAY, $660.00!!! But I'm sure there's someone(s) out there that'll pay it, and probably willing to pay more! To each their own. BTW...The NS-95 SSD new went for $1,095.00, for what I paid was a steal! Again, IMO, and as a personal preference, I prefer the sonics of the BTS pre over the Japan or Europe HazLab pre. Plus, as a collection piece of SPECTOR history, how many headstocks like the NS-94/95 SSD are you going to find out there? That is of course IMO & personal preference. Now the USA 9v HazLab is a total different story.

My NS-95 SSD has the BTS pre and the SB is always asking me to PLEASE turn down the volume. And I'm playing thru a relatively small rig, Ampeg B-15T 100W, which master volume is at 3.5-4, in a good size sanctuary that seats 400+ and very tall vaulted ceiling. I always have plenty, more than enough, volume. No matter what...I never use the battery that comes with the bass. Always replace it.

I am really hoping that it was in fact the battery. I always use Duracell . I find them consistent and long lasting and when I played EBMM instruments they were recommended by the company. I am seriously hoping that the Duracell is the answer, it seemed to help when playing solo yesterday.

If I remember correctly, Eveready is more of a "bargain" battery that is sold at the dollar store. I used to buy them in bulk for my CD player/walkman and they never seemed to have a lot of juice.
Gonna stick with Duracell and maybe even go with the Procells. I've got a friend that uses them and never had a battery die on him yet:
Mad, when I first got my Euro back, it worked when I plugged in, so I assumed the battery was good. When I got to band practice, it just wasn't carrying, and was getting swallowed by EVERYTHING. Shawn had a spare battery, switched them out, and bam! Big improvement. It was hard for me to tell at home because I was playing at a low volume, but I could certainly tell when I was trying to keep up with everyone else volume-wise.
That sounds like a similar situation with me. I was thinking that the EMG pickups/pre were just "tame" but I think the new battery is definately going to help!
