Spector Club - Part 7

Hey JP.
In my experience it was much easier to measure a bridge correctly by not trying to measure from center to center, as you have to measure kind of free handed, but from side of saddle to same side of next saddle.

I attached a pic to show you what i mean.
That way its way easier, and assuming all the saddles are grooved dead center, pretty accurate ;)

Greetings,
Karl.

More like, buy a $50,000 cat and get 8 free SPECTOR basses! LOL. That'd be more funny to me.
:D

Insert "$50,000/Slang name for 'Cat'/generic joke about wives/Girlfriends/Significant Others and bass expenditures here!" :smug:

Yeah, you've got to make your own joke - damned if I'm going to get banned on the material JPS handed to me... ;)

JPS, great to hear that NAMM when off great, this years crop of instruments look absolutely fantastic, and personally I'd like to say great job on the Alex Webster signature and it's "Splatter Graphic" - as a horror movie fan, I totally dig it! The Red Inlays are stunning (I've had long plans to get SIMs LEDs under the inlays of one of my Spectors after seeing a picture of one here, which is the "High Cost" version) and I might be talking to PJ if it would be possible to have those put in a non-AW bass - his specs, while making for a nice version of the great Classic Spector tone, don't exactly suit me or my tone.

if youre stoked on the pics... just wait to you see it in person! tele style bodies(yes the guitar tele body....:spit:) seem to have been the new thing everyone has been doing... good to know Rex has been wanting this one for over a decade lol

LOL yeah I'll just keep referring to it as a "singlecut" design, thanks! :D ;)

However I don't mind it being a T-body style at all. Retro, even tho I'm not a retro guy, while still being totally classy.

Anyone have or considered trying the new aguilar pups in one of their Spectors? Thoughts on the sound/tones?

That's what is so special about the Coda. Which BTW... was another one of the most popular basses there.

It has the Aguilar pups and tone control. It's got a killer neck and everyone who played it, from Third Eye Blind's Abe Millett to Mike Duda of W.A.S.P. loved it.

I talked with Justin Meldal-Johnsen and we're sending him the black 4-string from the show to demo at his studio.

Those Aguilar pups when mixed with their tone circuit and their amps (which is what we had at the booth) are a sick, sick, sick combo. I've yet to hear a combo on a J-bass that sounded better.

No Joke.

I was hoping you spector nuts could help me out a little here.

What are the sonic differences between the NS5CRFM and the Legend Custom? I've played my NS5CRFM for hundreds of hours and listened to the Legend Custom for hundreds of hours and just can't see any justifiable difference. I played a Legend Classic at a local store here and the playability wasn't too off. Craftsmanship was noticeable though.

You basically answered your own question at the end there. The main difference is that our Korean-made instruments are production-line instruments. Whereas our Czech factory has an enormous amount of custom-hand work involved.

The Legend Customs, which have been discontinued, BTW... are set neck design. Which allows for a lot of sustain, but the NS5CRFM is neck-thru. And really that's the ultimate when talking about sustain.

Both are great instruments, don't get me wrong. And I'd put either up against any other manufacturer's product in the same price range. But the comparison against each other, I think the quality of materials and the hand-built aspects of the Czech models will always make them superior to the Korean production models.

Sonically, the difference in materials, the fact that the Legends are passive pup/active tone control whereas the Euro models are active/active... and the type of tone system, EMG (made for us) in the Legend Custom or depending on which year your NS5CRFM was made it might have one or another tone control (Phat is the acknowledged expert on those models in these here parts).

All SPECTOR® are designed to have a tone close to that "classic" SPECTOR® NS-2 sound. But some are closer than others.

My thing is that I've rarely heard a SPECTOR® that didn't sound good. The variable usually are the amp and the player. Our new Performer by SPECTOR® models which are passive/passive sound fat and have a nice tone (when running though several thousand dollars worth of top-of-the-line Aguilar equipment).

Sorry to run in circles. But I think the quality of the construction and the materials used should be the main source of any tonal differences you hear in the two models discussed here.

When I get time. Dinner two nights in a row with Stuart and lots of little moments to talk about different things during the show... and Ned's booth was two booths down. But he and I mainly talked about the film industry and technology developments there.

This was a cool moment for me. I got to stand between the two men... the two minds that gave us the best bass guitar design in history. :-) IMHO.

That smile was real.
