Spector GAS

I've never tried one, but I looooooove the looks of the Classic 4X (Thunderbird-style...do I have that model name right?) in frickin' Holoflash--GORGEOUS!! Does anyone know how it plays/sounds compared to an Epi Thunderbird? I really want a 'bird-style bass. They look and sound great to my ears.

There are a few in the Spector Group that own one.. maybe you should ask there and see what they have to say.

A Spector Legend is going to do absolutely nothing in preparing you for what an NS2 feels/sounds like. Spector is a "pay if you wanna play" boutique brand. At the least, you need to get into a Euro model, that's a good start.

Heck yes. The Euro is where I would head too. Gotta I say I would drop the yucky soapbars for the PJ configuration, though.

I think the rebops (at least the older ones) are like a Bolt On Euro with passive EMG. If you like a bolt on neck you could change the pickups later.

IMO not a bad rout to go at all. That is the road to Spector I took. Being a Fender guy my entire life, I wanted to try something active and non-Fender. I decided on Spector and found a used Q4 Pro (I believe the predecessor of the Legend) and never looked back. It has quickly become my new daily driver. Now saving for an NS or Euro neck thru.

They're my favorite of the bunch. Cheaper and lighter than a Neck-thru. I found the combination of the EMG-HZ pick-ups and Tone-pump 2-band pre-amp to be perfect for me. They're really easy to mod, too. Sooooo many EMG pick-up options for them, too.

agree to this completely.

and (no affiliation) a rebop 4 was just posted, asking price of $600. That would be a great introduction, for Legend money.

Is there much tonal difference with the rebops? If I'm going to get one it better have that signature Spector tone.

Well that "signature" sound comes from a solid maple body and neck, the HAZLab 9v preamp and a NT maple neck.. that is the real signature sound.. beyond that, the others come close.. i don't care for the DC35 style pups.. the real sound comes from EMG active P/j set up.. and if you notice, the jazz pup is actually the neck pup.. not the bridge pup. But, Rebops and get that growl that Spector is famous for, a lot come with the TonePump pre.. which is a step up from the TonePump Jr. that comes in most Legend basses.. There is a fan base for the TonePump pre.. it is strong, it is loud, meaning it is a very hot signal to the amp.. if you get the TonePump with the Trim Pot, that will most likely work better.. the pre i like is the Tone Capsule with passive pups.. if it is active pups.. then the HAZ 9v.. which is the Spector heart and soul to the basses!

I also have been bitten by the Spector GAS BADLY! However, the NS-2 is way out of my budget, and I fear that my second and third options (Euro 4 LX & Rebop 4) won't deliver "that" Spector tone. BUT, I will absolutely admit I know zero about these models and am making a complete assumption.

Frankly, the Legend is uninteresting to me (I didn't even want it; bought it because I needed the case it came with and it was cheap). Looks great, sounds... not great.

The closest you'll be able to get to "the sound" will probably be a pre-2002 Euro model; after that they switched from all-maple wings to the alder/walnut/maple combo. I'm not sure what the going price is, probably $1200 or so? Maybe less.

With a euro, you'll get about 90% there. If you can install a haz pre, a snc haz copy, or a darkglass tone capsule, in a euro, you'll be 95% there. I can't speak for the rebop a as I have never played one in person, but as for the euro, oh yeah. I have a euro and a snc haz copy in it and it sounds just as I described.

I've had my eye on getting Spector GAS many times, just here in south GA not too many opportunities to try one out to see how I like it. Good luck on your gear test though =D
