I own one, the neck is fast. I don't care for the pickups, in my opinion there is no high end at all, the body is flat (doesn't have that spector curve/bend to it).

Spector Performer?

Difficult to compare these two basses. I currently own the Performer and used to have a MIM Jazz bass until recently if that's telling you my preference. It's all based on what kind of sound you prefer, the feel of the bass- it's so subjective, it isn't possible to really answer this. Heck, I would even take the sound of the Performer over a MIA Jazz bass. No way a Fender can duplicate a Spector, even the so called "bottom rung" Performer. Again, this is a very personal preference, others will obviously feel differently.
If you're talking about resale value however, the MIM retains more of it's original value. If an investment is what you're looking for, it's the Fender.
Well...here is the thing in the past I have owned two MIM J-Basses. I liked the necks and all but wanted more bottom end to go with the grindy tone. I played a Legend is a music store years ago and loved the feel of the neck and action. I am a huge Mike Starr era AIC fan and dig his Spector+Ampeg tone.
Gritty, aggressive with some umph! The thing about the J-Bass for me is that at times I feel its a bit to thin and want some more meat and potatoes kind of sound in there.
That was the reason why I sold my Jazz, I can see why people like it but it wasn't the kind of sound I wanted. I sold it two weeks ago and right afterwards, went to GC to buy a Sterling Sub Ray. It was perfect for my needs, had that crisp full sound, nice feeling neck and price point was better than expected. ($286 inclusive of tax)
That being said, if the neck of the Fender is something you do like, they do have this option: this might be worth a try....

Spector basses do have a sound all of it's own though- I really had a hard time believing it wasn't active- even opened up the cavity to see if I could find a battery in it. A Legend definitely sounds like the bass for you, perhaps one will be available at a great price used when you're ready to buy one. I'd probably go for that rather than a Performer if you can swing it.
Where in the world could I find a used Kramer era NS 2A? I am pretty sure that is the bass Starr used back in the AIC early days. If I could find a bass like this for $500 bucks I would be so happy!
they are fairly easy to find...the NS 2A is the Korean version of the NS2. Join in the fun of the Spector Club here on TB and learn all you can. Start on Ebay and here in the TB classifieds and the Guitar Center Used Site...you will find one.

Not to sound like a nerd. LOL But was the bass he used a Korean NS2A or was it a higher end bass?

Used Kramer NS2's run about 2 Grand..some more, some less...but with an NS2A you have the bassic Spector bass which sounds outstanding on its own, but changing out the passive Spector pickups for EMGs and mating the EMG's to the stock Haz Copy preamp gets you GOLD. But an NS2A and an NS2 are going to sound remarkably similar....and the biggest outward appearance difference is the NS2 has the Crown inlays in the neck....the NS2A does not. Having said all that, I have an NS2A that has no preamp in it at all, just the active EMG's that were installed..and it growls like any other Spector ive ever heard.
