Spector question

I have a 1999 model Euro 4LX

Well, back then it wasn't the "LX" at all. The LX version has only been around a couple of years, and what makes it different is the back 1/2 of the body is alder with a maple top. They also have a differen't preamp than what you have.

Your '99 Euro NS4 came from when they were using solid maple bodies. But you right about the pickups...the NS5's only had soapbar pickups.

I used to gig for years with a Euro (Czech) NS4 and NS5. The sounds were pretty consistant, but the feel was way off because the NS5 is a 35" scale.

I don't see the cut out's in the body on any other model working for the P/J configuration, so which other model comes the closest in sound?

You gotta help me help you...do a little searching on the net and you'll be enlightened :D

The cutouts aren't the same...EMG 40P and 40J pickups are pretty much your standard precision and jazz pickups in a soapbar style housing which WILL fit the Spector 5 strings.

PS...they're all "close" in sound. As previously stated, Spectors all sound pretty much the same with subtle variations.

Too a point yes. But switching out the HZ pickups for active EMG's is like taking a really thick blanket off your speaker cabinet. IMO, the preamp is not the culprit for the muddy tone...it's those God-awful HZ pickups!

so what pups would you suggest? i have a rebop and i'm getting a bqc control. i won't go right out and get new pups... but i can be on the look out. btw, it's a 5-string.

Well...I'd HIGHLY recommend doing the opposite - keeping the Tonepump and switching the pickups. Everyone whines about the preamp but if you think about it, how often do you actually CUT bass and treble frequencies? I never do. However, having some midrange control is always nice.

As for pickups for the 5-strings, my personal favorite combo is a 40P and a 40J or a 40P and a 40DC. Just depends on personal taste really but having that P-pickup in the neck really adds a lot of depth and bottom to things.

shouldn't they all fit? i can't believe they all sound the same.

Believe it or not, the placement seems like it has more to do with the sound than anything. Just my personal opinion though. :D
