Spector user, please i need your comments!!!

I emailed Spector regarding neck dive this morning and 3 hours later i received an answer, That's Customer Service!!!

here is what they said:
our ReBop basses are approx. 7-8 lbs weight. so if one uses a basicnylon web strap I can see where this could make it neck heavy causingthe bass to slip. as long as you do not use this style strap you shouldbe OK.
we make our ReBop basses with the zebra top in clear high gloss so noworries. we have had very few special orders for this ReBop bass withnatural oil. and I think the zebra looks a lot better with the cleargloss! the clear gloss is polyurethane, nice and durable.

If have assembled basses in the past and i was always happy with polyurethane finish over Polyester, i may go with Gloss finish...

I don't mind take care of my basses but i ate when you can see some discoloration on the body because of the oil finish...

I have 3 Spector's, 2 high gloss (NS2 and NS5a) and 1 in natural oil (NS5XL). I don't mind the doing the paste wax thing every 2 months or so on the 5XL so much. Since it's my main player and she gets new stings every 2 months. It's just all part of maintaining the bass to me. However, I do love the "quickness" and the "feel" of the unfinished neck on the 5XL. I find a finished neck can sometimes get sticky, but thats just me (could just be a mental/OCD thing?) Great basses, get out and play a few and draw your own conclusions.

FYI..I use Levi's suede straps...I've never experienced neck dive issues with any of the Spector's I've owned.

Personally I love the feel of a gloss neck, but some people do find the gloss sticky. I think the absolute worst paintjob on a neck is what they put on the Tobias's. I couldn't stand the feel on the Growler, so just to see if it was something with it being one of the cheap ones I grabbed the Basic they had (a 3k street price bass) and it was just as bad!


To the OP: I would just avoid the rebop... you don't know what piece of wood you'll get, the Euro LX has better, more versatile electronics and better, more comfortable balance.

Yep! I agree that the LX's have nicer wood. They are also a tad bit warmer sounding since they have a slice of walnut through the body wings. Good point P.F.

Yes, gloss is sweet looking, but try getting a dent out of a gloss finished bass as opposed to an oil finished bass. I've steamed out a few dents on my 5XL..haven't had any luck doing the same with a gloss finish. I think the oil finish can be durable as long as you do your routine maintence...and you should be maintaining your instruments on a regular basis (or is that as a bassist?). That said, I wouldn't kick my gloss finish Spectors to the curb, I love'em all (but do have my favorite!)

I can't try a Rebop i haven't seen one in the 3 shops who sells them around montreal...

The euro LX is not offered in bolt-on version! only neck-thru

I really prefer bolt-on, i will have to go with american bolt-on but they are not in the same price range!!! maybe i should try to find a used one...

ANyone around who as a zebrawood top USA bolt-on 5 for sale??? at an affordable price!

The neck thru v bolt on isn't really relavent... It's like choosing between a Squier or an Alembic Series II... If they had the exact same electronics and materials then it could be a good comparison.

I had a 5 string where the previous owner put another strap-lock in the "standard" location (centered behind the bridge) allowing me to A/B the difference it made. It had lots of neck dive when I tried to wear it with the strap at the stock Spector location, none at all with the other. With the modification it was the definition of stability.

If you don't mind an extra little hole in the back side of your bass (or two strap-locks back there) its an easy fix.

I've owned by Rebop for a couple of months now and I was wondering about this strap lock location. Really struck me as odd. It makes it hang differently and gets in the way when I try to put my bass on the stand. I may move it.

As for the finish, mine is the high gloss which is less maintenance. Waxing isn't that big a deal though if you like that look, I've had my Warwick for 6 years now and waxing actually forces you to clean and maintain it.

As for the Tone pump, I'm still up in the air on it. I absolutely love my low end tone, but sometimes feel I would like more highs (maybe I'm just spoiled by my Warwick thumb). I find that I'm really cranking the highs on the Rebop, especially for slap, but of course that is just my preference.

Excellent bass. I prefer oil but it's prone to nicks and scratches moreso than the hard gloss finish. Stock electronics are pretty good. They get a bad rep for being boost only but if you think about it, how often do you cut bass and treble? I hate the EMG-HZ pickups though and those would definitely be something I'd replace.

If you do want to oust the tonepump, get an Aguilar or EMG. Both of those are very good preamps and suit Spectors extremely well.

Glad youre lovin that Rebop Zebrawood, Don. But Im amazed that youre wanting MORE highs out of that tonepump! WOW...youre the man, even when I was slapping on it I kept the highs at about half way.

First of all, you're getting an amazing bass.

I have the one with the high gloss finish, and for a bass that isn't boutique, I'm amazed by the quality of the finish. It's incredibly smooth, clear and consistent, it's like having a bass coated in a thin film of glass!

As for the preamp, I like it, though I do occasionally miss having a mid control. For what it is though, it's a fantastic pre IMO. It's crisp, well voiced and very useable. I sometimes thinking about taking my Spector in a different direction by putting Bartolini pickups and preamp in it when I get another Status bass but until then, I won't be touching it. I like the EMG HZ pickups, it really is a fantastic sounding bass! Such growl and articulation, beautiful!

As for concerns about the woop top...check out the Zebrano on my Zebop! I don't know if I just found a good one or what, but it blows me away!

I was surprised myself. The reason I've always wanted a Spector was for that sound, but I still find myself reaching for the highs knob. I'm still getting used to it though, I've been playing my Warwick Thumb for over 6 years and my Wick has a very hot tone, so my ears and fingers are still getting used to the new bass. Everything considered though, I love the Rebop. Plays great, feels great, sounds great and last, but not least it looks great.
