Spector user, please i need your comments!!!

Hi everyone,

I plan to buy a Spector Rebop 5DLX EX
the one with the zebrawood top!

1)It's available in 2 different finish: high gloss and natural oil
DO YOU HAVE ANY PREFERENCE?

2) Are you happy with the stock electronic?

3) i think of maybe replacing the preamp by an Aguilar or a Glockenklang...

If I were you, I'd post this in the "Spector club", thread.

After that being said, high gloss, will require less maintenance.
The natural oil will require you to clean and wax every "__" months (2-8, depending on how much you use it... ex. Sweat, dirt, etc). You may be ok with the stock pre, so don't count anything out, but if you don't, not too much of a hassle to change up, (tone dump thread in my sig). Zebops are very nice looking. Good luck.

My question to you would be...Have you played a Rebop? I owned one for about a year and a half and although I like the overall tone, I had to get rid of it due to the neck heavy factor. That thing would dive straight to the floor when let go. Youre going to need a good wide strap for the Rebop.

With the increased price of the Rebops now, you should consider looking into a used Euro LX, which can be had for the same, if not less, money. They are perfectly balanced and sound amazing. The last one I had (sold it for an Aggie GS412) had an 18v Agiular preamp and sounded like heaven. It was the most solid player Ive ever owned. The Rebops are nice if youre willing to deal with the odd weight issues between the body and neck but my advice is to look into an used LX as well. The best choice I ever made.

I didn't have the chance to try a rebop, i tried a legend but i prefer alder body...

my main problem is My favorite body wood is alder over maple or basswood...

I have to admit that neck dive isn't really pleasant!

Is your model was an older version with full alder body or it was the zebrawood version? Because zebrawood really not as light as alder so it may help, i can also use hipshot ultralite tuners!

I think you have some good questions. The first thing you need to ask yourself is ...
1) the type of music you play that will accomodate the way you play your istrument.
2) Is the Agular going to give you the sound your are looking for..? ask yourself this.?
3) Find out what is the wood of the zebra basses...
4) Personally, I prefer with High gloss because it gives you more sustain. So, ask yourself, the type of playing you will be doing...do I need sustain or punch...
5) You might with a Bolt-on with High gloss and you will get more Punch out of your bass.
Finally, friend,,, find out what is the Zebrawood made of?
by the way stay with the Spector Electronics...you will be amazed how it sounds...

I had the chance to try a bass (not a spector) with alder body, zebrawood top, aguilar obp-3 but with vintage jazz pickups, it was awesome.

I thought that the rebop should be the one for me cause i really like the wood combination Plus the spector basses ergonomy is simply one of the best....

Some company do great oil finish and some don't... I have a warwick and it needs to oiled and waxed very often, and i also have a custom bass that needs it qwice a year and still looks new after 5 years...

Honnestly i prefer satin finish but it's not offered... i will go with high gloss if the bass is discoloring and get dirty as fast as a warwick...

Two things, High Gloss on LX. The preamp could be a good idea, but if you spent a bit more you could get a USA bolt on that has a 3 band. The TonePump is good, but I kind of wish it was more than just treble and bass.

I've had my LX for a couple of months and it is a great bass if you like the feel of the neck. If you're a jazz basser you probably won't like it, but if you're like me and enjoy thick necks you'll love it.

You are talking about a Neck thru design, i really prefer bolt-on so i really have to go with Rebop or USA bolt-on.

the usa is a lot more expensive and it has a Mahoganny body and i never tried a mahoganny body before!

Anyone had neck-diving problems with the Rebop 5 DLX EX???

I own a 5-string Zebop with natural oil finish.

I LOVE the tone, feel, and i have no neck-dive probs. (Have in mind that neck-dive has to do also with how low/high you wear your bass, and in which angle)

The natural oil finish needsa bit of maintenance but i don't mind, cos the looks are a killer ;) (better than gloss imo)

The EMG-Hzs are more than ok to me, and as for the preamp, the Tonepump, i like it!

If i were you, i'd go all the way for it! (But hey, i've done that when i was me :P )

Alder is used because it is cheaper than mahogany. Mahagony is used in Gibsons...

I have nothing against alder, it's what my basses are made out of, but it is used because it generally does not have "distinguishing" characteristics like a maple bodied bass.

Mahagony is is supposed to warm...

Even on the four string rebob there were neck diving problems... I didn't care for the HZ's either, but that's a matter of preference.

The neck dive is more a product of the strap-lock location on the butt of the bass than it is about the bass' design. In my experience at least.

I had a 5 string where the previous owner put another strap-lock in the "standard" location (centered behind the bridge) allowing me to A/B the difference it made. It had lots of neck dive when I tried to wear it with the strap at the stock Spector location, none at all with the other. With the modification it was the definition of stability.

If you don't mind an extra little hole in the back side of your bass (or two strap-locks back there) its an easy fix.

I <3 my USA BO! I wondered about mahogany and it was described by the seller as "smooth". I thought to myself "isn't that more about technique?"

But then I got it and it was indeed smooth. With the pups set to HH, it gives you the tone you would expect from a Spector only a little warmer. Then if you switch the bridge pup to single coil and back of the bridge pup a bit, it is by far the smoothest bass I've ever played. It's actually startling breadth of tones you can get out of it.

As for the ZeBop, ysand's is natural oil one beautiful.

I like how the tongue (or whatever they call it) matches the zebrawood, and personally, I like taking care of my basses.

Edit: Neck dive sucks, but if you "balance" it on you, it's not too bad. I think moving the neck strap button toward the neck would do more to aleviate the problem than leaving more weight hanging on the bridge button. You see, I have this crazy idea for this single cut Spector....

I don't mind putting a secong strap lock if that solves the neck diving problems!

I can use Dunlop flush mount strap lock and you wont see the second stap button...

Even if alder is cheaper, i personnally prefer it's tone over mahogany
