Speed up Firefox and IE

There is a Tweak Network extension that accomplishes the same thing. Find it at the Extensions link in FF. It has the bonus of being able to set you back to default at a click.
Yep, FasterFox basically allows you to do the same thing, and if you choose custom mode there is a pipelining section that you can set.
Tweak Network is separate from FasterFox. Looks like they do the same thing. Caution against using prefetch in Fasterfox, though.
Our computers will all probably completely meltdown in like an hour and a window will come up saying "pipeline setting of 10 too high. System failure."

Should be the same process. If you have firefox, just type in about:config to your browser and follow the steps. I think it's not the operating system that's slowing you down, it's just the browser that's doing it.
Hmmmm....I don't think this works for those using IE7. The option to make the adjustment is not available for me in my registry.
You guys may run across a few servers that interpret your multiple connections as a hacking attempt, and shut you down from connecting at all. Be warned.

I haven't had any problems so far. It would have to be a fairly paranoid server, I think, since I even went to a bunch of government websites and it was fine. It's probably a different type of connection. I mean, there's a difference between downloading the contents of the website that is available several times on the same machine and trying to get behind that to the source files or something.
You may be right. I was just throwing it out there so people knew. I actually think we talked about doing this a while back here in OT.
I modified my registry to include those entries. I also see someone posted a "how to" on how to do it in the comments below the video.
I seem to be going a little faster, not a huge difference, but noticeable.

Good warning from Mike, I have read that some sites will not support the multi pipeline server requests. How they respond to such requests may vary, but there it is.
That's why I recommend one of the extensions listed here, either FasterFox (without the prefetch) or Tweak Network, as you can go back to default with out having to remember up how you made this change in the first place.
