Double Bass SPIROCORES ARE SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!

I use the 3885,0W set (3/4 light) which is in between the 4/4 medium and light sets in terms of gauge and tension.

So they are a little thicker, too? Excellent! Time to spend more money...

I had tried stark G and E on this bass, but they are too much and kill all of the beautiful vibrations. A little more dig-in-ability would be lovely, though, and these may be the perfect middle ground.

Thats awesome! I'm loving my spiro strung juzek under the bow (its my bowing chops that are the issue)

Same! 3885 3/4 Weichs on my juzek are breaking in great since I put them on a month ago. They’re quite good for arco. Starting notes on the A string isn’t consistent yet, but that’s mostly my fault. The Helicore hybrids I last used were more inconsistent in more ways.

Bill Merchant called this bass “Juzek-ish” when I brought it to him right after I bought it ages ago. It looks right but has that weird Saxon neck set and is totally flamed out, which is remarkable for that era.

Don’t bother with a Shen willow flatback. I tried a few in the same room with a Rogieri willow.

Go find one of those.

Little late now haha plus the price is unbeatable

Picking up a 3rd bass this weekend (don't ask) which is strung with spiro mediums. That makes 3 basses all with spiro mittles (ok 1 stark E). I don't plan to change anything...

The strings on the hybrid are super bright as its a very bright bass. I want them dead now haha. I just don't play it often enough to kill them fast. Maybe twice a week for my outdoor gig.

Aw come on! You could have a pizz string bass, arco string bass, AND gut string bass at this point. Please let me live vicariously through you.

been recording myself this past week at hame and different gigs. It is so funny what a weird headspace going thru string choices is....Spend years and years farting around only to come roaring back to Spiros. Damn they sound good in the mix, I can hear myself, feel the music and project it, bump the drummer rhythmically, solo without getting spastic and dig on in. The ugliness of the whine is minimized with technique and a good board (two things I have spent a lot of life on the other side of) and maybe because of that what used to feel really stiff and unforgiving now feels ballsy and attentive. Really digging the Reds.

@DoubleMIDI I was looking at your Dropbox chart and I notice the string gauges for the Spiro 3885 Mittle set are crossed out. I know the tension is a little higher but are the gauges the same? I would like a little oomph on the G and E on my Kolstein travel bass and was thinking of trying those out now that I know that I can get singles from Gollihur.
I think you refer to the baen.tamu.edu file that I have corrected regarding tension data.
The gauges are the original data from the source at baen.tamu.edu that no longer exists.
I have tried to keep the original data as it was but striked through if it was wrong(-ly calculated) and added in square brackets my corrected data (with a comment reference at the end of the group or row).

I had collected gauge data from talkbass, but never found the time to put something together. I also feel that that might better be made by the community by getting a cheap micrometer and each of us could measure their own strings and put it in a shared spreadsheet. But I even didn't find time to set up such a thing and there is data that should be collected and prepared before.

I just had a look at the chart.
The original gauge data was identical to the S42 set, so I assumed that the data was accidentally taken from the S42 set because it is more common in the USA. But since I was not sure, I striked through all that data because I couldn't proof the validity of the data for either of the sets.
See reference 16 and references 29 and 31 in that chart.
I know the chart is not that intuitive to read, but I kept it as it was and just added my stuff the way it was originally designed.

I have a 3885 medium set and could measure the gauges with a micrometer, but that might not happen before Christmas (and probably not before the new year).
Personally I'm not so much interested in exact gauges, so I'm not that much interested putting a lot of time in that. Maybe I have a file somewhere where I put some measured gauge information. I get back if I find something.
I have several projects that I prepared to start that didn't happen during the last ten years, so there is a lot to work on for me if I can find some spare time.

Someone took some phone video of a gig from yesterday and i was very happy to hear my 4/4 Weichs sounding pretty large and actually on the dark side, but with a hint of high end to round it out. This was the first time i have gotten to hear them from an audience perspective. Ironically that thin G string does not sound thin in any way. I really see no need to ever modify the set or go up in tension. Great set of strings i must say.

I've had Spirocore 3/4 lights on my main bass for 16 months now and they still sound good. Nice sustain and clarity, and when I play more traditional styles I can easily get a darker, thumpier sound by changing my right hand technique. What made me really appreciate the clarity of Spirocores in an amplified setting was playing a series of gigs on my other bass which is wearing a set of Evah Pirazzi Weichs that are well past their prime.

Guess what set of strings I just ordered for that bass.

Obligatos?

@DoubleMIDI I can dig it....I have about a million things I've been meaning to do. My intuition tells me that a string of the same construction type would almost have to be incrementally thicker to have slightly more tension over the same measure. I've been using Dominants for so long on my regular basses that I haven't had to think about anything but keeping my chops calibrated to play such a stiff-yet-glorious-sounding string. Now with the travel bass, they aren't an option and I'm back in the world of "everything I love about Spiros and everything that bugs me about Spiros". Thank god I'm not looking beyond Thomastik any more...that would be a very deep rabbit hole!

I really liked the BelCanto on my fully Lemur Catalina not only bowed but also for pizzacato. Very thumpy. Either I am a better arco player now but there was no discernible difference in how easy to was to start a note on the BCs vs the Sprios and BCs are known for the bowability . No scratchy. I like the Weich. This is the first time i have use a Spiro Weich . I think the BCs were also too thumpy even at lower action. Only issue is I think I have the S42 set on a 3/4 bass and my E is buzzing a bit. Need a mittel E, Meanwhile I'll get a small piece of birch or a maple bark and lay it on the nut slot.
