Double Bass SPIROCORES ARE SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!

I think the whole Mittel set is louder than the weichs

True. On my basses, there is a small loss in acoustic volume while it's a slight gain in lows and a bit less in the mids. Amplified sound negates those small differences. For me, Weich tension is the sweet spot. Though arco is a bit easier on the Mitts. And I am hearing every single note clearly tonight!

Does the Spiro mittel E has much more volume then the Spiro weich E?
And is the string tension much higher?

Thinking about changing my weich E for a mittel E. Just to try.

I liked this on my bass. It seemed to make the E sound more balanced to the rest of the set from the drivers seat, although my instrument seems to have a weak E in general. My teacher at the time seemed to think it sounded fine either way from out front. I dug its sound but hated its tension, so I ended up losing the spiros all together at that point...

On some basses the mittel is stronger. Some basses, however, like lower tension and then the weich will have more volume. This is the case with my old carved bass. On this bass the mittel E not only sounds weaker then weich, it also chokes the other strings. This can also happen when somebody wants to help the E by using heavier gauge string. It may (or may not) help the E, but can kill the other strings.

Just got my bass repaired, had them put on a set of weichs to replace the old student grade strings that were on there. The first reaction of my friends and family when I got the thing home and started playing - 'What happened? Why is it so loud now?!' Loving the volume, sound, feel, etc. It's now official - I am a Spiro lover!

The mittle E, obviously, has more mass and therefore more tension than the weich of the same set. With more mass, there is the potential for more volume. But since added tension comes along with it, there is also the possibility of "choking" the top, which could actually cause less volume. As this varies from bass to bass, the only way to tell is to get one and try it.

Please explain how adding mass increases tension.

I don't see how if I clamped say, 3 ounces of fishing weights onto my Weich 'E', the tension would be affected at all.
