splitting frequencies vs splitting pickups

This is a question about bi-amping. What are the basic issues at-hand when deciding to split your pickups in-stereo vs splitting your net ouput with a crossover? This would be an old-school setup with one amp putting-out the low bass guitar tones, and the other amp overdriven or with chorus, etc. My basic lack-of-understandings are:
-when using a crossover, will the low-amp tone suffer a loss?
-when using stereo out, will the high-amp be able to handle the low fundmental notes that will make-it in the mix?
