Home Depot. Lengths of allthread, wood for clamping surfaces, wingnuts and washers.

I did that almost 20 years ago and I still have them. Haven't found any reason to use anything else.

I cut plugs of 3/4" plywood for mine, with hex nuts on one end and wingnuts on the other. Best practice would be leather (or similar) discs between the work and the clamps.

Most of my clamps are homemade out of scrap, but a while back I scored a set of lignum vitae and leather Kolstein clamps on Craigslist for almost nothing.

They’re classy as hell, but you won’t catch me paying $300 retail for them. There are no witnesses to the horrors that occur in my workshop.

Just a note about threaded rod. If you buy it in the bolt & nut department, it's expensive. But they have 10 foot lengths in the electrical department for much cheaper.
