sprained ligiments & a bad band

so i am pretty sure i am on my way out of my band just as it starts taking off.

i sprained all of the ligiments in my right hand about a month & a half ago. (i have no clue how) the band has been giving me a ton of crap about not jamming & i am really fed up. they gave the drummer a month off when he burst his appendix & didn't say a word. i had to scramble to find a replacement & everyone was unhappy about playing our gigs without him. but as soon as i hurt myself they brought in my sub instantly. so now i get some messages from the guitar telling me he is the only one keeping me in the band.

well i need my hand to heal more than anything so i can play the rest of my days & if they can't figure that out i guess i am done. 2 years down the drain over a few month injury is pretty lame.

Cortisone is a steroid, be VERY careful with it, it will speed healing but it can do long-term damage. If a doctor recommends it, get a second opinion before you do it. But definitely see a doctor if you haven't.

Give it time to heal, and ice it several times a day. Stay away from the bass. Stay away from your computer keyboard.

This band is not worth your health.

Well maybe they want a bassist who can do his job without injuring himself? I dare say your technique will be contributing to your injury.

Your drummer getting Appendicitis is not the same thing. That is hardly his own fault, and you cannot bully him into playing the drums if he just had an organ out. Simple as.

In my band, the drummer broke a finger and we had to jam electronically for a while with him on drum pads, and we had to work round that. No point taping sticks to his bandaged up fingers or whatever.

However if I came to rehearsal and with the argument 'can you guys cool it down tonight and play slow songs, I totally ruined my arm playing my bass unprofessionally' then it is a different matter. Just saying.

If your band believe they are poised on success then they would not want to see a shot (and in their heads probably their only shot) at success ruined by a bassist who has one of those niggling injuries that will probably blow up into a huge problem somewhere down the line.

Sounds like you didn't hold much of a rapport with the band anyway if you had to dig out a sub drummer nobody liked anyway and only the guitarist is gunning for you. Once again, just saying.

Wow meddle, you really read into things. i don't know where you came up with half of that but i dare say you don't know jack. but let me give you a bit of back story so you don't reply with something dumb again. but you seem like you will anyway. i mean where did you get that they didn't like the sub or that i did it playing unprofessionally? you sound like a huge douche.

i did not hurt it with bad techique (i have been playing 3-4 multiple hour gigs a week for years) the doc thinks i did it picking something up wrong. but i immediatly went to the doc & got mri's & x-rays & such & they say there is no structural damage. the physical therapy is really helping.

& everyone loved the sub i used. they just didn't want to play without a band memeber. but now it is a different story i guess.

i said they were unhappy about playing our gigs without our drummer. if you want to infer they didn't like the sub that is up to you.

what is your problem? i know, you jump to conclusions & are harsh for some strange reason. & probably bitter.

My problem is I get angry if I don't get a fairly regular dose of capitol letters, such as one every sentence or so.

In all seriousness I can understand your band's attitude. If they don't wish to work round your injury (yet show far more favour for your drummer when he is out of action) then it is time to leave. They will either gel with their new bassist or regret their mistake, but it sounds like they don't care enough about you. If playing bass becomes a chore, or more of a task than in anyway enjoyable then you also need to think about getting out. Sounds like they put "taking off" infront of "welfare of individual members" which sucks in any situation.

+ 1

No band is worth losing your ability play ...
Take a step back, let the band do their thing and you do yours. The first thing on your mind needs to be your healing.

I do think some of the comments above jumped to some conclusions. It COULD have come from playing. Or one of 100 other daily activities. I write software for a living so I am quite susceptible to injury. Another thing that causes me injury is long distance bicycling. I had an injury one time that I am reasonable sure came from how I was sleeping (curling my wrist funny and laying on it wrong. This was corrected by sleeping in wrist guards that keep me from curling my wrists...and they eventually trained me not to sleep like that.

To the poster's point, though, it sounds like you should take some time off and look for other opportunities when you heal. For me, it would be difficult to return after hearing that one member was "the only thing keeping you in the band". That's pretty harsh...and hard to hear...and, IMO, not a place I would want to spend time.

Good luck with your healing...make sure you take some time. 3-4 hour sets multiple times per week? You have to be careful...

well i am out. after all of the cryptic emails i just asked & got the answer.

i have always been very concious of my wrists & i have worked really hard at always having both hands relaxed & comfortable when playing. & i really don't have time for any other activities besides playing. so i treat them very well. but i have been wearing the brace to bed. i can tell in the morning if i don't.

well our manager is PISSED. just got off the phone with her. she is trying to save me since she thinks i am a driving member. but i told her it's not worth it & don't want back. she wants them to apologize & that is NOT going to happen. i know them too well. i'll just let them run through another dozen or so bassists.

yeah i am definitly going to keep up with her. she has a mad amount of connections & i have another great band that has asked me twice to join so i might see where that takes me.

i asked for motives & it is all over the place, my style doesn't fit to i haven't been practicing enough, i'm too opinionated, i hurt my arm, but they keep refering to my style. but our singer just gave an interview where he said he really likes that i played different styles beside rock because it adds a new dimension. so i think my arm is the main reason since it will definitly be a few more month before i am 100% again. they just are being very lame about it.

i just wish i knew what they were thinking, the guy they are going with, who has been subbing for me for a few weeks, has been chunking 12 bars & such so i am at a loss.

they definitly want a pushover. they hated on every piece of gear i had becuase it was NOT ampeg or fender. you should have heard the uproar & insults when i said the other guitarist should play the intro to little wing this last week.
