Squier Affinity Bass

I came across this bass this morning on Craigslist. I spoke to the guy and he seemed like a nice guy. I made arrangements to come and pick it up on my lunchbreak. It was listed as having a broken pickguard. I was running late and didn't look it over good enough. When I got home I noticed that there aren't any holes around the horns for the pickguard. The "broken" one is not broken at all but has been cut in a bad way to make a custom pickguard that was added on. I did a google search for Squier basses with no pickguards and didn't find too much. I also noticed that the plate on the neck is completely smooth. It doesn't say Squier on it like the images I saw on Google. The neck certainly looks good. It has the proper markings on the headstock. Did I get duped? Is this a cheap copy with a Squier neck?

It could be. The holes could have been filled and the body repainted and the little pickguard added. As for the neck plate that could have been that way or changed from a squier one to a blank one. The bridge also doesn't look like the ones I've seen on squier basses.How much did you pay?

As funny as it sounds, it's a Squier fake...or more likey a mutt.
That's not a Squier body or bridge. I once had a different brand of cheap MIK P bass copy that had that exact same bridge. So someone bolted a loose neck to one of the many copy bodies floating aorund

Thanks for the replies. Should I expect any troubles from the mating of the neck with the wrong body? I've read about people putting different necks on bodies before. Are the neck lengths somewhat standardized?

As long as the distance from the nut to the 12th is the same as the 12th to the bridge you'll be OK. I doubt very much it's a fake neck,there's way
too many folks buy a Squier and swap the neck for something else.All those spare Squier necks must go somewhere. Body-wise you may have lucked
-out and got something other than agathis:thumbsup:

The only Squier I got has a serial number and country of origin on the back of the headstock.

One thing though. Please ditch the scratchplate, it's horrible:)

I I had to guess, I would say it has been filled and resprayed, as that doesn't look like a colour I've seen before on squire. The pick guard is clearly an awful custom job.

I would check the scale length is correct, and make sure the wiring has been redone okay. If you want to take the neck off and check the heel and neck pocket for any clues.

But for that price? you can really complain.

Well I really hate being tricked like this. I guess I can blame myself for not looking closely. I would like to replace the pickguard since it already has some of the holes drilled. Does anybody have a guess on the body maker based on the shape? I think it looks alot like a Lotus but with the jack on the front. If I can't find a pickguard, I might try my hand at refinishing it. I always wanted to try that. Anybody have any suggestions of a site or book that is useful for that? Thanks everyone.

If it plays and sounds good I wouldn't care if it was a NoName-O bass. Some tuners cost $70!
Hey, it looks good in orange...I'd probably get a black pearl or plain black P bass pickguard made for it or simply buy a $15 Japanese one and hope it fit.
Of course, you could always make one yourself.

+1 Judging form the picture, the refinish looks good. I'd leave it as is and put a b/w/b guard (no pearl) on it and call it a winner.
