SQUIER AFFINITY GETS A NEW LIFE AND TOTAL FACELIFT !

Thanks for all the compliments !

The pickguard is the original Affinity guard, just aged. I'd use a nicer mint guard, but the Affinity has a different cut, and I don't feel like making a guard or having one made. Looks ok as is, though a 3 ply mint (or even a tort) would probably look a bit better.

Question that you can choose to tell or not here:

What do you personally do to get the finish checking?
There's the razor blade, heat and UV lamp way, but yours look really nice.

From a bit earlier in the thread -

As for finish checking - well, the old fashioned way still looks best IMO. Cured nitro finish... cold....hot....cold....hot...etc....till you get what you're looking for. The clear coat has to be one that doesn't contain chemicals to resist yellowing and checking... many modern nitro clears do. Other than that, patience. :)

Thanks for the compliment. I've tried a few different styles of checking in the past, and each works ok...but nothing quite looks as "right" as doing it the old fashioned way, with cold and heat.

:)

I'm gonna guess DH won't reveal his true secrets to us TBers on the public forum...that's what makes these relics so magical...:ninja:

I'm guessing he has a time machine...

(there might be a few things about it that I'm keeping to myself....but the hot/cold is part of it....shhh.... :) )

I'll bet just a little bit of experience rounds out the formula.

Anyway, it's really impressive, even more so if it's a player.

Thanks man.

Part of it is knowing when to start the process...knowing your paint and how it cures, etc.

1. I love your work.

2. I love your fence. That's the best photo background I've ever seen for a bass. If you move, don't forget to take it with you!

Thanks !

:D

I definitely give that fence a workout ! It just makes such a great background, and seems to "highlight" every bass (or guitar) I put on it. I wish I could take it when I eventually move, but I guess i'll have to find a new backdrop....but hopefully not for quite a while !

Great job i have looked at all your build threads that you have posted here, i'm a real critic of relics and your body/paint ageing is very believable, i actual see your work as better then fender custom shop there finish wear looks to smooth like it was sanded, just not believable IMO.

Again nice job , looking forward to the next!

The first refin I was going to attempt was on an affinity jazz. It had a pretty big gouge in the paint. So I heat gunned the paint off, down to the polyester level and I was shocked. I thought the people at squire probably drug all the bodies behind a truck on a gravel road, dipped it in polyester, and called it smooth. So many dings and dents etc, I decided to sell the body and neck as apposed to trying to deal with it.

I love that color. As usual DH, you went above and beyond.
