SQUIER AFFINITY GETS A NEW LIFE AND TOTAL FACELIFT !

I am curious about what you thought about the original pickup in your affinity. Did you not like the sound of it or just mod fever kicking in. I picked up a used one cheap a while back and while I am no P bass expert it sounds pretty good for a $100. Is it worth a pickup replacement?

The first refin I was going to attempt was on an affinity jazz. It had a pretty big gouge in the paint. So I heat gunned the paint off, down to the polyester level and I was shocked. I thought the people at squire probably drug all the bodies behind a truck on a gravel road, dipped it in polyester, and called it smooth. So many dings and dents etc, I decided to sell the body and neck as apposed to trying to deal with it.

It is absolutely SHOCKING how little "wood prep" goes into these bodies. The undercoat basically smooths out all the imperfections...but it also forms a "shell" around the body. As you can attest Blender, quite a bit of work went into getting the body filled, leveled, and ready for paint. Worked out well, but main, lots of grain filling.

:)

I love that color. As usual DH, you went above and beyond.

Thanks - it's my favorite custom color.

The original pickup was OK, but lacked some bottom end...sounded a bit "sterile" to me. Not bad, but really didn't have the balls that a good P Bass should have IMO.

Before you think about replacing the pickup, figure out what you don't like about the tone and what you want it to sound like...if indeed you decide you don't like the tone.

And remember...just because it wasn't what I personally wanted, that doesn't mean it won't be EXACTLY what someone else wants.

People (especially on TB) tend to get a bass and immediately want to change all kinds of things about it, without really even knowing what they don't like about the original instrument or what they hope to achieve with the mods. Don't get stuck with that mindset. If you decide to mod your bass, have a "reason" and a "plan". It will save you time, effort, and money.

:)

It's a shame you're not still running Big Chief DH.
I'll miss these awesome refin threads.
I was planning on commissioning a 1973 tele, but alas...

Never know how things will work out in the future, but right now I'm just tired. Among other things, it gets tiresome building the 20th butterscotch blackguard Telecaster in a row.

You can always email me when you decide to do the project...maybe my mood/mind will change by then.

Thanks for the kind words. It's nice to know that people dig the stuff I've done.

:)

Actually I think it sounds great through my rig. Just never was a p bass guy and have never played/borrowed one to know what a "real" p sounds like with my gear. Thanks for the info.

So I bought Dark's P and put her to work (the P in featured in this thread). She's been with me the past few jobs. Lovin it! Oh, that's my 77 J and GK MB212 in the background. ;-)
