Squier Classic Vibe Club (Part 3)

Anyone else have their late 60's jazz delayed like crazy. Mine has been sitting in Chi-town for 3 days hanging out, wishing there was better pizza around.......
Ugh...a debate even more contentious than "P vs J". In the end, pizza still tastes like pizza, even when one eats it while up on a high-horse. :p :D
 
Since it was brought up, allow me to share a wee lil' trick I use when installing Ultralites...specifically, how to get them relatively in-line and straight.
  1. First off and most importantly, I save tapping a pilot hole for and installing the single screw for last. Call it a "measure twice...cut once" thing.
  2. The ferrules that screw into the assembly from the front might be a little loosey-goosey inside the peg hole, so I start by wrapping the outer diameter with some kind of low-adhesive tape to fill the excess space. Keep adding wraps until you get a snug fit. It doesn't have to be super tight, just snug enough that the ferrules won't jostle about the peg holes. Trim the excess tape flush to the ferrule and you're done with the first step. (In my case, I use white artist's tape, but I suppose painter's or gaffing tape could work, too. See the pic below.)
  3. Measure and gently mark the midpoint between the two, leftmost screw holes with a soft pencil. It doesn't have to be 100% accurate, just a visual cue to let you know you're in the right area.
  4. Place inside the peg holes and screw the tuners and ferrules together to about 95% tightness...firmly installed, but with enough "play" that the whole assembly, post and ferrule, can turn a little for fine adjustments.
  5. Take a flat straight-edge, like a ruler or T-square or some such, and press it against the bolts on the bottom sides of the tuners. As long as your straight-edge doesn't bend or flex, all the tuners should align themselves with each other. Angle the straight-edge as needs be until the tuners are place at a 90° angle relative to the top of the headstock.
  6. If you can see the mark you made through the screw hole, you're ready for the next step. Taking care not to nudge the tuner out of place, drill a tiny, shallow pilot hole for the screw. Also, make sure the drill bit is a little smaller than the hole, so you don't nudge the tuner out of place.
  7. Install the screws into the back of the headstock.
  8. Tighten the ferrules on the front of the headstock.
  9. Install strings and rock the 'eff out! :smug:

You would think Hipshot could make/find an adapter ferrule to accommodate all those customers who have had to do this.
I looked for a nylon ferrule piece that fit correctly and I was not successful.

If I had to guess, I'd say Hipshot went with that size to achieve a "one size fits most" groove. After all, it seems to me it would be easier and less costly to add a wee bit o' girth to the ferrules than to have the peg hole reamed out. :unsure:

Was just looking at Hipshots dimensions drawings...
I just realized that if I had bought the USA Hipshot Ultralights they would have fit the (17.5mm) 11/16" holes in my headstock! Duh!
I bought the Licensed Ultralights which fit a (16mm) 5/8" headstock hole....what basses come with 16mm (5/8") holes in the headstock? I don't have any.
Still would like Hipshot to address the issue with a nylon spacer set, there's lots of Fender/Squier/Yamaha/etc. basses that are going to have this loose fit issue.
Dummies like me will think the Licensed Ultralights are the same size shape as the USA made.

Ultimately, once the tuner is screwed down to the back of the headstock, it's pretty much there to stay...barring some serious blunt force trauma. (Love that word, "blunt force trauma"! :blackeye:)

When I first I hit upon the idea, it was mainly to make sure the tuning post is centered within the peg hole before screwing down the plate. If it happens to also give a little cushion to the ferrules, even better.

The artist's tape is cheap, easy to apply, trim and remove. I suppose one could get away with using any sort of adhesive strip material. Aluminum foil tape or something like that could be a viable alternative, but I suspect it's not so easy to remove.

While I've been typing up this post, I just remembered a brainstorm I had some time ago for a very "crafty" (pun wholly intended :ninja:) way one could create their own spacer. A friend of mine makes paper beads all the time, so I got to thinking I might be able to fabricate a spacer using a similar technique. All I'd need is a dowel the same diameter as the ferrules, long strips of paper and a bit of Mod Podge to hold it together and seal it up. Once I figure out exactly how wide and long the paper strips need to be, fabricating them should be relatively easy.

Let's say the paper strips need to be approximately 13" long. (Not a proven length, just a random number I'm using as an example here.) Just to be sure I get proper fitment, I could make one that's 12", another at 13", yet another at 14" and so on. Once the Mod Podge has fully cured (about 15-20 minutes per coat), I could check which one fits best and go from there.

Have I mentioned I love low-cost, artsy-crafty DIY solutions? :smug:

I remember @LowEndLobster has a great video of his painter's tape trick for this process.
 
If you contact Hipshot, they can send for free different ferrules to fit a particular situation. I've done it twice recently getting a bigger ferrule to fit my bass....

Yes, Hipshot is great about that. I was changing tuners on an Epiphone Jack Cassidy. They didn't have the plates in stock, made them for me free of charge. Took couple weeks to get. Great customer service.

… Since CV production moved from China to Indonesia, people have been searching for a retrofit tuning machine and nothing seems to be a perfect fit for the Indonesian classic vibes. I wonder if we contacted Hipshot, and offered to organize a "group buy", as well as provide a sample of the stock tuner, if they would be willing to produce a special run of tuning machines that fit the current gen of CV basses. I don't know if it would be in their best interest to create an entirely new product, however it might actually benefit them since it's something we've been asking for for the last four years. What do you guys think?


In other news, I just had a set of Graphtec Ratio tuners installed on my Indo "late 60s" CV jazz bass. The fit was almost perfect, and I believe only one new hole needed to be drilled. Additionally, the back plate was a little beefier than the stock tuning machines, so the old screw hole is completely covered and is not visible. That makes the Graphtec Ratios another great option for the Indo CV basses. They are, however, a little pricey at $150 a set.

How is only one screw hole showing? The holes are in the same matched positions left and right? How would it not be two holes showing?

Actually none of the screw holes are showing. I may not have worded it clearly enough, but the new backplate is larger than the old one, so it completely covers the area that the old tuning machine sat in… Including the screw hole. I can't give any better details than that since I didn't do the installation myself, but it only took him about 10 minutes to install them and it looks completely stock. I'm still at work, but when I'm done for the day I will post some pictures of the new tuning machines and you'll see what I mean.

Pickups sound great- I need to look under the hood to see if the electronics are stock. Overall very satisfied with this one! (I think this is the 3rd one of this exact same bass I've owned since they came out.) I always end up modding these up but someone did all the work for me here! :thumbsup:

Congrats! Yea they are great looking basses, very happy with my recent natural 70's grab, it is a great player. Badass bonus. Enjoy!

As promised, here are the ratio tuners on the back of an Indonesian classic vibe. The installation looks factory with no visible leftover holes. Shafts were a perfect fit.

When i sold the indo CV50P , i give the unopen Allpart tuning machine (chrome) set to buyer since the stock has similar issue like yours (E and D tuner).

He report me that Allpart set work well. But i dont know does the set are direct plug in (screw holes placement) or not because he bring the bass to luthier for install and fret work.
