I leave the bridge cover on, gives it just a bit more of the vintage vibe without bugging me while I play. I like to move around the strings for different timbres and the pickup cover is too restrictive for me.

I'm a thumber and maybe I can live if I can't get to the area over the Jazz strings - I hope. The part I don't think I'll have an easy time with is that I also palm mute and that looks like it's gonna be impossible to do.

I believe that the foam mute on the strings under the bridge will help a lot.

Well, folks, since today it's absolutly clear: I'm gonna sell my Fender Mike Dirnt sunburst (my main bass) and only keep my Squier CV 50s. The Squier blows me away every time, it's the sound I was always looking for, but I didn't notice it first.
I don't get warm with the Dirnt sound so that it has to go after just a few months in my hands.
Maybe I'll buy another Squier CV 50s then. I would like to refinish another 50s into creme white...We'll see...

Just an FYI here. Last weekend I did a pickup replacement and had no problems with incompatibility. The new pickup, a Fender Original Precision pickup, fit right in the original opening with no modding required.
I wish I could say I had a good chance to compare the two pickups, but the new Fender had one coil that was noticeably weak. I don't know if it had some shorted windings or what. So I've swapped the original back in.
While I was in there I redid the electronics with full sized pots, cloth wire, Sprague cap, Switchcraft jack, and some proper set-screw type knobs.
I wish I could say I had a good chance to compare the two pickups, but the new Fender had one coil that was noticeably weak. I don't know if it had some shorted windings or what. So I've swapped the original back in.

I did the same thing to mine and essentially had the same experience - no modding required. The difference between the 2 pickups are pretty subtle. I found the sound with the Fender Originals was a bit fuller and had a stronger bottom end. I will also tell you that changing the bridge to a Fender vintage style also made a huge difference. Not that difficult to do - instructions in this thread. I was pleasantly surprised at how much better it sounded. Wish I had done it before the PU change to compare but it's possible I might not have changed the PU if I had.
BTW, I have 5 basses including a Mike Lull and 2 Fender AVs and I keep coming back to the CV 60s. I just love this bass. Currently running with DR Sunbeams - I have chromes on my AV P. Keep thinking I should try it with the TI flats that I have but then I play it and can't imagine messing with it.
I've now got a gotoh 201 bridge on my CVP. while I liked the fender vintage bridge I much prefer the look of the 201. It feels nicer when I rest my hand on it as well.
Can you describe what you thought was 'better'? I'd like to know if you got more HIs or MIDs or LOWs when you changed out the bridge.
Oh, and what musical style do you usually play?
If you put a bridge cover on your bass - then this situation is solved. Immediately.
1) you can't see the prettier bridge
2) you won't be able to feel it either since you can't touch it either.
Just a thought.

My basis for comparison is my 62 AV 57 P. Changing the PU got me closer to this tone, changing the bridge had a larger impact in terms of fuller sound, deeper bass and more sustain. It seems counterintuitive since the stock CV bass is high mass with brass saddles. Knowing what I know now, I would have started with the bridge. I no longer have the stock PU so not easy how it would sound with vintage bridge.
Interesting from the photos the Gotoh 201 looks like a better version of the CV bridge. From my guitar experience I know it's hard to tell just by looking what material the bridge is actually made of. I've swapped bridges and tremolo blocks in Strats with higher quality ones and it made a noticeable difference in tone in sustain. One of the things that prompted me to change to the Fender vintage bridge with a conversation with Jimmy Coppola builder of Alleva-Coppola basses. He makes some with high mass bridge, some with very high quality Fender vintage style. When I asked why, he said the bridge is a key part of the vintage sound and you won't get it (at least to his ears/liking) with a more modern high mass bridge. At $35 plus your labor it's hard to argue.

For me I noticed that the highs didn't seem as crisp, the sound was more fat and organic. I wasn't really expecting much of a change at all, I just wanted the narrower vintage bridge for the spacing, so I was a bit surprised. I put flats on it and it's perfect for when I play Meters, Headhunters, and any time I'm looking for a classic P bass sound.
In my case it was better for ME because I was looking to get a 60's vibe from my 60's vibe

The CV HM is definitely the largest. The base plate is just slightly thicker than the Gotoh, and both are thicker than the Fender.
The string spacing on the Gotoh is 19mm so slightly narrower than the CV, and as this was the only issue i had with the CV.
I think the Gotoh is a perfect upgrade.
I'm not really after a vintage vibe, just a good P tone and i feel i have it. Im also going back to XLS soon, i like the Chromes but i feel i need more overtones.
