Searched around but couldn't find much--any of you guys out there replace the pickup in your CV P-bass? If so, what did you replace it with? I am getting mine today and thinking ahead as I am looking forward to modifying this bass, one of the things I wasn't super thrilled with when testing it out was the pickup, which is to be expected on a Squier. I was thinking of a vintage fender or duncan as I will probably use this as my 'vintage' sound P-bass, with flatwounds. A nice companion for my hot maple and rotosound MIM P.

Squier CV Precision pickup?

Just started looking through it actually. So many pages! I found some posts here and there saying "i swapped out for pickup x" but not necessarily a review or comparison. I will continue digging.
yeah, you really have to read peoples comments and come to your own conclusions.
For what its worth (and i dont have a P at the moment) i would like to put a Fralin in one if i did have one.
Ive always liked the tone of those pups.
Then again, they cost over half of what the bass would originally cost so maybe not.
I have Wizard pups in my CV Jazz now, they do some nice vintage P pups and are very cheap (half the price of a Fralin).
i have a G&L mfd pickup in mine - much higher output. i had a '62 fender in there but it wasn't much different from the stock pickup.

That's what I'm hoping for--I won't condemn the pickup until I get some Labellas on it.
I tried a SD SPB-3 and didn't care for it. Made the bass sound really hollow. I have a DiMarzio DP122 pup in there now and its fine, but not that much different from the stock pickup except it's got higher output.
I put a Bill Lawrence P-46 in and really like it. Gives nice clarity on the low notes, and I'm running it with flats. That said, if I hadn't already had the P-46 sitting around, I would have left the stock pup in place.

Stock pickup for me. When I bought the bass, I was concerned it might not be my cup of tea, but the more I play it, the more I love it.

I don't personally own one, but I've clocked a lot of hours on more than a few. The stock pickup sounds great to me, and I'd actually love to see it go into production if the market for it was there.
I have the Tele type 54 P bass with single coil pickup and I agree the stock pickup isn't too bad. Better than a lot of the really cheap junk out there. However I swapped it for a custom wound pickup from Pete Biltoft. He made it to my specifications and it's exactly what I hoped it would sound like.
I considered the Duncan Quarter Pounder, but that's the one I have in my 78 P and though it's one of my favourites I just wanted to try something different. The QP would be a very good choice and incidentally, I don't think it's at all scooped in the mids as some others have stated. I have to scoop a bit of mids out with mine. I don't know where that idea comes from. Even Duncan on their website states the QP has strong mids.
I just got an old G&L SB1 and the pickup in that would be a good choice for your Squier too. I sure like mine. It's a very hot pickup but I can mellow it out by backing off the tone control a bit. I use Thomastic flats on all my basses.
Experimenting with pickup height can make some dramatic changes so try that with the stock pickup first, You might not want to change.
I'm not particularly fone of DiMarzios. Had one in my 78 P before the QP and the QP was a big improvement. to my ears.
In the end though, it's your ears alone that you have to trust. You can't make a sound decision based on the opinion of others, so get out and try some P basses and find out what pickups you like.
