Squier guitars like squier basses?

There's a lot of hype going around about squier basses saying that they are quality instruments and sound good. I'm looking for a cheap electric guitar for some recording (no no, I'm nowhere NEAR becoming a guitard), and was wondering if this trend was also present in squier guitars.

If not, what is an alternative for a cheap, decent electric guitar?

Thanks in advance!

I have a Squier Affinity Strat. It's not all that bad, but it isn't high quality. It's probably worth about $150 tops. I have gotten some good sound out of it, but also have been frustrated with the tone at times. It is overall a good guitar with value (especially since they're so cheap), but if you want CHEAP and decent, go for the Squier 51. It's a Strat body with a Tele neck and an original Precision PG. Bridge Humbucker and neck SC, you get a decent sound for under or around $100.

there is a Squire strat which sits in the corner of our practice studio, and my first impressions of it were..
it had to be tuned, and would not tune properly.
It felt like crap, and sounded like crap, and after strumin a few sounds, i had to keep re-tuning it.
my opinion of the Squire gat = P.O.S.:spit:

i think people posting here have limited experience of newer squier guitars.

the VM and CV series are, like the basses, amazing guitars for the money. Easily up to the level of MIM Fenders with a good setup.

The cheaper lines like the affinity aren't as good, but if you put a bit of time into them they can be great value for money.

The Squier guitar line suffers from the same schizophrenia and inconsistency as the Squier bass line. The low-end, most cheaply made models are just pure junk, but the upper-end Squiers and special runs can be pretty nice guitars. There is alot of diversity amongst the Squiers, you really have to know what you're looking at (and looking for).

When I was looking for a cheap guitar for recording, I tried the new CV at the store, they felt and sounded great! I ended up with an Epiphone just cause I liked it's sound better, but quality-wise I actually think the Squier was better.
On the other hand, a guitarist friend of mine has a Squier Affinity and it kinda sucks.

esp makes some great guitars as well. I have owned a few cheaper guitars like under the 300$ range and one was the affinity strat which I hated I got it at guitar center and returned it after 2 days, and got the epiphone lp special 2 which wasnt bad but not a great guitar eather. I got an esp ec 50 off a friend for 120$ it was like 250 new but eather way it blew the epiphone and the squier away. the stock pickups sounded amazing and to this day I pick it up more then the epiphone. look into esp too...
