I just put GHS Boomers on mine. They are an improvement over the stock strings, but when the time comes to replace them, I may go for something mellower.

I'm a keyboard player, and don't know much about playing bass, but my wife wants to pick up the instrument. She already has experience on mandolin, ukulele, and guitar, and recently sat in on bass for one song at a gig and loved it. (The regular bass player taught her a simple line at the previous rehearsal.)
This particular bass was suggested to me as a good choice by some comrades in the MusicPlayer.com keyboard forum, and I found this thread (and the now-closed part 1) via Google.
I see that some of you have felt the need to upgrade various parts. Can I assume that's because you're discriminating connoisseurs, and that this bass would be fine out of the box for a first-timer?
Any other things I should know about? I plan to buy this at Chuck Levin's or my local guitar center before my wife's birthday next month.

Jeff, It'll do everything you need it to do especially if youre just beginning. Modifying basses is a sickness here on TalkBass and the linger you're around the most likely you are to catch Frequent Modder Syndrome haha. For instance, months ago I would have been fine with this bass stock but then I learned I can make it sound exactly like I want it to with new pickups and pots, and I could increase the stability with a new bridge. Some of us just have problems and can't leave a good bass alone
In short, this is a great bass and super comfortable for beginners and experienced players alike. For the price you can't beat it. PULL THE TRIGGER! BY THE THING, POST PICS, AND GET A CLUB NUMBER!!!
New strings are a must but other than that the bass is just fine stock. I am just a hopeless tinkerer and at this price point I don't have to worry about messing it up.

You'll want to set it up or get it set up, with a fresh paira strings, but beyond that, there is no big need for mods. This bass is amazing for the price.

The only issue you may find is the Jazz (bridge) pickup is weak (low output) and tends to buzz as most single coil pickups do.
Hey guys, I ordered my Jag last night from sweetwater for a whopping 144.99 delivered. I cannot believe how much love there is for an instrument at this price!
I am a fan of chromes, but I see that the only short scale set they sell is a 45-100. Is this what everyone is using? I use 105s on my P bass and prefer a heavier string. For those using Labellas, what size are you using?

you can buy long scale chromes and cut them short. it's a little rough getting them round the tuning post but it works just fine. if those are your favorite strings i'd try that first.
i used labella 760FL on my jag for a while. i had to widen the nut slots.
Decided to get me some HiBeams. Stainless steel strings + Dimarzio DP126 pup set = angry, cutting tone. Just what I'm looking for.

Hey Jeff - the bass is fantastic out of the box for somebody getting going. I wish they had something like this when I was starting out playing.
I got mine for recording. I specifically wanted something that could cop the old P-Bass tones so proper pickups were mandatory for me.
Electronics are usually where manufacturers cheap-out on low-priced instruments. The nice thing about these Jaguar's is, once your wife is ready to move up, tone-wise, she's got a fantastic modding platform.
