My thanks to all of you for the words of encouragement. Judging from some of the other posts, these strings would work:

DR Strings Sunbeams SNMR-45 Medium Short Scale 4 String Bass Strings

(Just out of curiosity, how would they be better than the stock strings, especially for a newbie?)

Also planning to get the basic Musician's Gear/Guitar Center Electric Guitar Gig Bag, which I understand fits but just barely, and a strap.

Some flatwounds might be easier on the fingers but in all honesty if you're gonna play you might as well get the blisters out of the way and start toughening up those fingers. It only takes like a week if you're playing a lot.

You might also consider ground wounds, also called half wounds. These are built like rounds on the inside core, but are flat on the surface. Makes them feel like flats but provide more brightness like rounds. They might not suit requirements for slapping and harmonics, but are otherwise quite versatile. I use them exclusively on electric bass guitar.

i used labella 760FL on my jag for a while. i had to widen the nut slots.

I have the 760FL strings on my Jag - in that case, no mods to the nut were needed.

It is a good choice. Like everybody says, change the strings immediately. If you're buying from a music store have them make sure it's set up properly, and put on better strings. My preference is either GHS Flats or D'Addario Tapewounds. Either will sound good and be easier on her fingers while learning. Get a gig bag to go with it, since Squier hasn't released theirs yet, you'll have to find one that fits. At least on the two I have, the finish on the red one was better than the silver.

They don't have to be modded, as there is good sound right from the box. BUT, like anything else, sometimes you just have to rip them apart and start over.

Just a quick update. Here's a shot of Owen rocking #18 at band class last night. He has yet to play a bass he likes better than this one. He likes the P-pickup solo with the tone at 100%. Sounds great with that new GK behind him (man, did I get a deal on that thing) and the amp is color coordinated with his bass!

This bass has some staying power. He's still on the stock strings (had to soak the E in denatured alcohol and it brightened back up). Cool bass.

I hope that when I have a kid someday they take an interest in music, awesome chance for bonding, you're a lucky man.
