As far as folks buying them, I just don't think the word is really out there. More shops need to keep one or two in stock maybe? I dunno.

I think it's a combo of low cost and brand name that scares most away. But that's fine....more for us.

Your points are both well-taken, but consider Dogfish's quest to find one for his daughter. They simply are hard to locate, especially if one wants a red one. You can't buy what's not in stock. Then again, I don't see how a place like GC could keep them in stock if they did get their hands on them.

My wife agreed to get me one of these for Christmas - I love short scales (have a Gibson SG Supreme and Guild JS1) and was looking for a red one. I placed an order with GC - they even let me use a $15 coupon (price down to $129, but they charge tax...). Initially it said ship 12/12, then got moved to 12/28. Now I see it's out to March for new orders. I called and they said since my order was in earlier, it should be filled out of a planned 12/28 shipment but who knows.

In the meantime, after reading all the reviews and seeing the silver I actually began to think I liked it maybe better. Elderly had one in stock, so I went ahead and ordered it - should be here before Christmas Looks like they still have a black one. Haven't decided if I'm gonna cancel the GC red order yet. These are so absurdly cheap I may just get it if I really dig the silver one...

In any case, it does look like the red is the scarcest color at the moment...

Oh how I love Elderly Instruments. I used to work there in college and grad school, so I consider it my alma mater. One benefit of getting your Jag there is the repair shop. Every instrument they ship gets a [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] from their awesome techs.

Yeah, I've gotta admit - that's one of the reasons I stopped looking once I saw they had one... I've been on their mailing list forever but never ordered from 'em - but no tax, no shipping - so $145 with a set up - hard to beat. I do all my own setups usually but it's just nice to know somebody competent will have checked it out before I open the box...

I called our local GC to see if they had any just so I could try one out. When I gave him the SKU - he said that's one the stores don't stock (the SKU started with an "H").. Beats me why not...

I really feel these basses wont be appreciated until there discontinued and then the prices will double on ebay. I have seen it happen to squiers before , like the vista series musicmaster

I think the Squier '51 was another one that got more valuable after discontinuance...

In the search for a hardshell VM Jag SS case, I've been taking my bass around to pawn shops and guitar stores, trying different guitar and bass cases.
Finally managed to snag a decent case at a Pawn Shop today. They had an older Gator Bass softsided hardshell case in pretty decent shape.
It was a bit longer than ideal, but depth and width were perfect. As well, because the neck pocket is EXACTLY the same length as the Jag neck from the body to the headstock, the bass is held perfectly still and centered in the case without added padding. I really couldn't have hoped for a better fit. Two large storage areas inside on each side of the neck pocket and an outside storage pocket. For 25 bucks I grabbed it.

On another note, are there any good books out there for adequate guitar players to learn the basics for blues/rock/folk bass?

I'm loving the bass so far, but I don't have anything to compare it to ...

I've been using the same kind of thing with a roadrunner case. There's a little room to shift but not much and the neck is the perfect size

I noticed something:

SS Jaguar bass making it $145. That's with
free shipping. They should be flying off the
shelves.

MF had a used SS Jag for $100 yesterday.
I guess if they only ask $145 new, they just
ask $100 for one used???

Well, I got my Christmas present - a silver jbss from Elderly Instrments. Wow. What a bargain this thing is. I don't know how much Elderly had to do to set it up - but all I had to do was tune the thing out of the box, and it's a wonderful sounding, playing instrument. Mind blowing that you can get something so nice for so cheap.

Easiest playing bass I've ever touched. For $145 delivered? Really??? Tone is great, feel is really nice. And yeah, I can understand the comments about soloing the J pickup being thin/weak/whatever, but frankly I've yet to play any bass where I really liked the tone of a bridge pickup soloed. It does give good tonal variety when mixed with the P. I see no reason to change anything on it. Maybe flats eventually but no hurry. My only mild issue - I like the fret edges a little more roiunded off than these are, but that's a 10 minute job when I feel like doing it. Other than that - wow... Maybe there's a Squier stigma, but I don't care, I'm just gonna enjoy this thing...

Today I modifiate my lovely Jaguar SS into a fretless bass. The work is not perfect but it has a good sound and playability.

Now I've got 2 Squier SS, one red and one black fretless. And Christmas have nothing to do with that
