Squier Jaguar Short Scale Club Part 3

I would like a number please. Here is my Squier SS Jaguar bass (below). Pickups have been upgraded to Dimarzio model P & J but everything else is stock.

I have a couple of questions for my fellow owners.

I've still got the stock strings on, which are ok, I like the gauge and tension, but the E is totally dead. So I need a new set. Open to suggestions... I prefer nickel rounds.

Secondly, what do you guys have your string height set to? I've got mine nice and low at about 1.5mm, which is great for finger style, but if I dig in with a pick I get a crazy rattle on the E string.

I just use a D'Addario round wound short scale set, it was all I could find locally.

As for action, I have mine set about the same and I have the same E string issue if it's set wrong. I usually tweak the neck then let it sit for a day or two to make sure it's settled. Then I slowly adjust a little at a time to work out the E string buzz. It doesn't take much but I really need to get the frets leveled and dressed.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Jag SS.
Strings: my preference for rounds is the same as AltGrendel, [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. They sound great, last a long time and it's hard to beat the price. Right now my Jag SS is strung with [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] simply because I wanted more of an old school tone.

My action is pretty close to your spec. As far as string rattle when playing with a pick: to eliminate the majority of string/fret rattle, I reposition my hand so it's closer to the bridge (striking the string between just in front of the bridge to just in front of the bridge pickup). You get a brighter tone and a little more string tension which helps reduce the string travel and rattles the closer you get to the bridge. IME most importantly, regardless of where your pick contacts the string, be sure to angle the pick so it slices through the string at about a 45 degree angle rather than hitting the string flat (hope that makes sense). When your hand is closer to the bridge it is easy to also lightly palm mute the strings to reduce rattling.

Got my replacement pickguard for the Jag; vintage 60's red tort, Tort/Mint/Black/Mint, made by Tony @ Pickguardian from my (very wonky) Squier guard. He's done a fantastic job, particularly considering he didn't have the bass to work with, smoothing out the edges and managing to mostly correct the massive underbite at the top of the control plate (in retrospect I should have given him an adjustment measurement for the top rather than the bottom of the bevel). Nice tight fit, and all the screwholes lined up perfectly.

I'm wondering if Squier deliberately put their wonkiest guards on the black basses, as it won't show so badly :p

Not particularly accomplished photo below. Bass now looks awesome to me, and no longer says "You should held out for a red one" each time I look at it. The red tort goes great with the thread on my LaBella strings and my Grolsch-cap ghetto straplocks*. Just need to get a replacement jpup in there (currently on back order) and I'm all done tinkering.

* just don't ask about my sapphire blue jack lead and Orange amp...

$65 for a tort guard, plus $17ish to ship it all the way to New Zealand, which is *very* reasonable. Pickguardian seem to have a good rep here on TB, while most other replacement guard companies have threads full of complaints. Certainly my experience has been good.

I took off the neck of my SS to install new tuners and saw that there's a hairline crack in the wood of the neck heel. I would suggest that if you (potential buyer and actual reader) buy one to mod it you make a complete check-up when receiving it to see if there's any problem like that...I did make a check-up but didn't took off the neck.

I can't return it and I already installed the tuners, so I just tried to pour some krazy glue inside the crack and I clamped it a few hours....I hope it's going to be okay. It makes me feel better when I tell myself I paid 195 $ CAN for it and that it maybe happened when I installed the tuners in the cold garage.

How do you like the Chromes on this bass? Others haven't seemed keen, and I really wanted to try them but feel a bit put off.

I've loved Chromes on previous P basses.

Developed an odd problem with mine…

I've done the magnet mod, and for some reason now when I turn the Vol pots off, I still get sound from it. Played it a couple weeks ago at church and when I turned volumes down to 0 I thumped the string as I put it on it's stand and the string definitely produced the sound, not feedback. Had my pedal so I was able to mute it, but not sure what to check. My arthritis has been bothering me really bad lately, so I didn't want to rip it all apart and take the meter and check the electronics. I may take the magnet back out, see if that does anything, Anyone got any ideas.

Been away from the net for a few days. I really like the sound of the chromes on this bass. The stock stings were OK, but sounded a little zingy to me. I chose chromes because I had a set on hand.

My Sadhana came to me with tapewounds. I liked the feel and the tone a lot. Since then, I've strung all my basses with either chromes or tapewounds. The one exception is my Skyrider.
