Any reason why you're using a 5-string pickup instead of a 4?

It's actually a 4. That's directly off the new MM SS 4-string Stingray. They're making them so the string sits between pole pieces, not over them. It is the same width as the J and P, it just looks bigger because of the size of the pole pieces.
With regards to the low j pickup volume the volume of the j pickup is lower than most p/j setups but a j pickup in this setup will pretty much always be lower volume than the p pickup, the only way to get the output similar is to pair a high output j with a low output p pickup. I paired a Duncan Quarter pounder j with a vintage P pickup and the output was fairly well matched, replaced the P pickup with a Quarter pounder p and the P pickup is definitely louder than the J
Ok so have managed to source a Duncan Quarter pounder P pickup and have replaced the Roswell with it, the Roswell was a decent pickup but not as ballsy as the Duncan Quarter pounder which has some serious cajones
I knows bases are discontinued but do that show up on the 2nd hand market often and if so have they already gone up in price? Ps i live in Ireland
If I didn't have bought mine yet, I'd go with a Talman Short Scale. They go for 150 Euro at Thomann
Yes, Ibanez tmb30 is a good replacement and has better pickups.
They do appear on Ebay quite often but yeah, the prices 2nd hand are more than they were new mostly.
Even though my little Jag gets very little play time these days I am still blown away by how good it is. I have tried the Talman and the neck didn't really feel as nice to me but that is just a personal preference of mine for thin and narrow necks. If you like the feel of the Talman it is a great buy as well.

Ok so have decided to give the Seymour Duncan SPB-2 Hot P pickup a try,the Quarter pounder is good but I had the urge to try the Hot, I tried it years ago but I was using flatwounds and it was not a good match but I had the feeling that with the strong mids on this pickup it would make a great rock pickup with rounds and also who doesnt like buying new stuff? so I decided to give it another try.
With rounds I really like this pickup and I think this one might be a keeper, it absolutely nails that Geezer Butler Black Sabbath bass tone, this pickup is strong in the bass and low mids and has rolled off treble response, it is a great rock tone, more dark,growly type of rock tone rather than bright and biting.
I've got the SPB-2 and a matching SJB-2B on mine, with rounds, and the variation in tone that is achievable is superb. The "Hot" pickups are a great "best of both worlds" choice i.m.h.o.
Yeah ive recently been finding myself liking a lot of the darker less trebly more low mid oriented rock tones like Geezer Butler, Nikki Sixx, Ben Shephard and the SPB-2 gets me in that ballpark. I have the SJB-3 in the bridge position and im not sure at the moment if I should keep it to add some highs if needed or whether I should swap it for the SJB-2 to keep that consistency in the midrange when both pickups are on
I think it's going to be one of those "suck-it-and-see" deals unless someone here has already compared the setups on their own Jag. If you do drop an SJB-2 in I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on the differences
Yeah I think I may just have to get one and try it, how is the tone of the SJB-2? Does it get bright or is it low mid focused like the SPB-2?
