Squier Jaguar Short Scale Club Part 3

I went with these DR's...just because I used Chromes on my P Bass and thought I would try something new. But im seriously considering putting on a new set of Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky's (because they are what I have right now...). It's the first bass in sometime where I actually was digging the sound of the round wounds (using the original cheap strings...which means the Ernies should be better). I know eventually I'll try the flats, and when I do I'll report back.

Magnet installed over J pick up. Easy squeezy install. Certainly does make for better output and tone on the J pick up.

I also installed the P Pickups off my American Special. And did install the DR flat wounds. Jury's out on the tone. However, first thoughts are that the American Special pick ups have a bit less clarity then the originals. I'd love to try the EMG Geezer PJ set...but its not in the budget to spend almost the entire price of the guitar on a pick up set. I have a set of '62 American Standard Pick ups I'll try if they American Specials don't pan out.

After reading this thread, it seemed the Jaguar was the way to go.

I literally un boxed my new bass tonight 30 minutes before my band practice. Simply tuned it up and let her rip. I had my American Special P Bass on standby thinking it would be fun to plunk for a few songs on the Jaguar and move back to the P, but the P Bass stayed in the rack all night. VERY impressed with this little monster.

I have a couple of nice P pick ups and a SD Jazz that I'm thinking of putting in the Jaguar, but as many have mentioned, there really is no need (doesn't mean I won't try them though:cool:)

My public service announcement for the day: If you were THAT impressed with your Jag with the stock strings, you better be sitting down when you play it with your new strings! I put GHS Bass Boomers on mine, which are NOT exactly premium strings and was blown away by the improvement in the sound and volume.

I ended up going with my DR flat wounds as I couldn't get my E string to wrap on the tuning post using my 34" scale round wounds I had hanging around. I had heard people have used long scale strings on short scale and made it work?

Anyhow, the flat wounds do sound good....but I do want to try a good set of round wounds. I'm headed to the local music store today and will see if by the rare chance they might have any short scale strings....or even GHS Bass Boomers.

I have to insist that you stop making this bass so appealing. I can't buy one until I get the rest of my basses repaired and I have terrible self-control. You're going to make me impulse buy one!

the bridge pup is a standard J size. Any after market should pretty much drop in, I know DiMarzio's do but I believe that a few folks have had to tweak the route a bit with other brands. Maybe someone else will chime in.

Seymour Duncan STK-J1 stacked bridge pickup fit no problems...I just didn't use it because of its weak output. Stayed with original J pickup with magnet mod.

Keep hunting. There are some good deals on this bass to be found on eBay, reverb or craigslist. I paid the regular going rate of $180 from a mom and pop store, which to me is still a good deal for this well made bass.

I've got long scale flats on my SS Jag. Was a little nervous about getting them on, but they've worked good for over a year now.
They feel real nice too. Hope this pic isn't too big:
