Hmm... I seem to have just bought your Jag SS off of fleaBay drool.
Ahhh! You will love it. As I did.
I recently fixed up a 1976 Musicmaster that I intended to sell, but it is such a great bass that it's going to fill my short scale bass needs. I'm not one to collect basses hence the sale of the Jaguar.
I had DR flat wounds on the SS Jag that I think sounded great. If you have any questions when you receive the bass please let me know! Enjoy!

I have a set of those here, as well as a set of GHS Pressurewounds. I tend to hate on the V/V/T controls most PJs have - I posted a mod over on the Ibanez Micro club to change it to a Bridge/Master/Tone arrangement for zero $$$ - only limitation is you can't have the bridge pickup louder than the neck, the "Bridge" control basically gives you a range of 0-50% bridge pickup vs neck pickup. Examining the docs for the EMG pickups it looks like I can do this mod by just re-arranging the plugs

Hmm... I see that a "real" Jaguar has block style fret markers - anyone tried those stickers you can get cheap? Or know anyone that can do real inlays for less than the original cost of one of these?

So, what high-mass bridges are good drop-in replacements? I prefer a slot-load bridge but haven't seen any that are 5 hole mount

$75 for the brass version - I suspect the aluminum version would be quite a bit lighter?
Yes indeedy. There's quite a bit of debate on whether or not brass and aluminum makes a tonal difference, and which one is better, so you might want to poke around a bit for those discussions.
I'm most concerned about neck dive so am leaning towards brass which is supposed to be twice as heavy. Weird that HipShot doesn't publish the weights

I've been playing bass for about 40 years. I suppose, given all that time, I ought to be a better player than I am, but at least I enjoy myself. I figure I've owned about 30 basses over the years: various Ibanez's, Gibsons and Fenders; a beloved late-70's Musicman Stingray that I played for many years (and regret selling); a Pedulla; a Tobias; a Modulus; an Alembic Series II; a pair of Wals; a Status; a Rob Allen; etc., etc.
So it's sort of funny that the bass I've fallen absolutely in love with and which has reinvigorated my playing is the cheap-o Squier short scale Jag. Based on what I read in this forum I decided to try one out at a local store and was intrigued enough to buy it. I really appreciate all the helpful tips that people have provided in this forum. I replaced the pups in mine with a DiMarzio DP126 set, upgraded the pots & capacitor, put on GHS Precision Flats (045-095) and stuck in a bit of foam for muting. I was going for an old school Pino Palladino kind of sound and I think this bass nails it. What a joy to play: quick and light and punchy.
I liked it so much that I just picked up another one. I'll do the same upgrades on it and I think I'll replace both bridges with Gotoh 201s. I don't have a problem with the tuners, but may replace those at some point to lighten things up a bit at that end.
My plan is to eventually convert one of these to fretless by replacing the rosewood fingerboard with an unlined ebony slab. The luthier will probably think I'm nuts to spend so much on upgrading a cheap bass.
In the meantime, can I join the club?

. I have a MF guitar case that fits most of my shortscales but the "all tuners on one side" Fender style headstocks are longer than most.

Just get a case that's too big and add high density foam cut to size. Works really well for me.
I love my black Jaguar SS....I got it when they first came out and now I am thinking about getting another and converting it to fretless. Has anyone here pulled their frets out? Curious as to how it went and how it sounds.
