Ok, y'all: I did it tonight. And then I undid it.

I don't know if I screwed something up or what, but it was awful. I couldn't get the pickup to screw back down properly; the top side went back in lower than the back side and I couldn't get it to sit flat. I didn't want to put too much pressure on the screws because I didn't want to damage the holes, so there was not much else to do for it. I think either the tilt or the new height was causing some problems because it sounded terrible. Harsh-sounding. Very bad. My intonation got super screwy, too. I took the magnet out and everything was fine again.

Oh well.

Sorry to hear that. If you can spare the cash, the DiMarzio DP-126 P/J set is a good basic replacement.

After trying sd hot p bass pickup with qtr pound pickup for the jazz pickup as mentioned earlier in this thread I have swapped the original p pickup back and swapped the j pickup for a wilkinson pickup.

Am finding that the wilkinson Jazz pickup and the p pickup blended together seems a little honky in the upper mids with the low mids a little scooped, I did not notice this characteristic with the stock j pickup it just sounded like a moderate scoop in the low and hi mids.

My question is this: what do you think is causing the upper mids bump ?

To my mind there are a few possibilities
A) the wilkinson is more scooped in the lower mids which is causing the upper mids to be emphasized, the wilkinson is not overly bright either which could further emphasize this
B) the hotter output of the wilkinson (compared to the stock j pickup) is causing it to be louder than the p pickup (the p pickup is only around 8k if i remember the squier specs correctly) which is emphasizing the upper mids
C) the low output of the stock j pickup causes it to have more highs and less mids than the wilkinson which is further emphasized when combined with the p pickup
D) the low output of the stock j pickup means that only a touch of the j pickup is added when on full volume

I had a local well respected luthier who builds custom basses do the pickup swap so I am sure it is not out of phase pickups issues

Fwiw I may well be returning back to the stock j pickup

Over Christmas, I set up my niece Ginny's SS Squier Jag and strung it with D'Addario flats. She also has a Squier Bronco (w/rounds), and so I spent some time helping her with baselines for a few songs she's working on for her school band. She has an acoustic B10 which is a nice little practice amp and they both sound great through it. I really enjoyed playing the Jag - after set-up and 3-point intonation was done it played itself! New players are lucky to have such quality instruments/amps for such a low cost.

Here she is, my Squier VM Jaguar short scale bass with parchment pickguard. Saw the photo johnk_10 posted of his wife's Jag with the parchment guard and it sold me. It does have some neck dive. My Couch 2" seatbelt strap isn't helping. As reported the J pickup is a bit weak and this one has some hum at higher tone and volume. Not sure if it's the pot or the pickup, will replace both at some point.

At 5'4", 46 years old and never having played an instrument, the Squier P bass I bought on CL last summer was almost as tall as me. Big thanks to Talk Bass and all the folks on this thread for helping me find my way to a bass that fits my "...damn stubby fingers." (a favorite Homer Simpson line) May I please have a number?

Here's my new Jag SS. Hipshot ultralights, DiMarzio Area J at the bridge, LaBella 760FL strings and a dark tort guard from twneagle at eBay. She weighs about 6 1/2 pounds.

Thanks. I had to buy the "pack" to get it, but I'll use the Rumble 15 as "test" amp for when I do mods or repairs at work. It is a surprisingly nice sounding little amp.

Maybe it's called something else, but it's adjusting the bridge saddles so the open string, 12th fret fretted, and 12th fret octave are all the same.

Not usually a fan of Fender bursts, but that looks good. I don't think I'd even have to refinish it.
