I tune mine DGCF, but that goes for all my basses. I use LaBella Deep Talkin Flats in gauges .043 .060 .082 .105, though.
Ah nice... I'll check out that for a gauge when I go up.
Had a good fang last night and yeah - it holds tune fine but its a little too floppy for my taste so going up in gauge is in order I think.
So i gave the strings a clean overnight and the change is amazing. Much brighter and, more importantly, much more sustain. Looks like some new strings will need to be ordered.
So, I'm one year in to my relationship with my Squier Jag Short Scale, and thought I'd give some longer term thoughts on the bass.
During the last twelve months I've gigged and recorded exclusively with this bass, along with weekly three-hour band practises and songwriting at home, and it has never let me down. The feeling of "This is my favourite instrument to play ever" hasn't faded one bit, and the only bass purchase I'm seriously considering at the moment is another one of these to modify and muck about with.
Bridge, machine heads and nut are all still stock, though the pickups and electronics have been swapped out numerous times because it amuses me to do so (and those stock pickups suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck). Here's how she looks at the moment-
Maybe this post is a bit redundant, what with the folks here all being fans of this bass. However, I wanted to let anyone in doubt know that this is a bass you can gig and play HARD without worrying about the fact it's a "budget" bass.
I will continue to rock this thing until one of us gives out.

I think this is my favorite Jag I've seen so far!! Looks like she'll outlive you!
Ok, so I've had the SS Jag in CAR for about three weeks. The ONLY thing that is bugging me is that the G string is very close to edge and I'm finding I'm flying off the board. Is my bass just kind of wonky? My form suck? (Obviously) Or is this just normal for such a thin neck?
Just looking for feedback from the JagMasters here. If mine is goofy I'd happily go through the trouble of exchanging it. But if its the nature of the Jag and I need to fix my form then I need to focus on that instead.
Is there a bridge that could adjust that string in a skosh to get it away from the edge? Maybe a fender threaded bridge?

I dont have any problems with mine and I have pretty thick fingers and dont play with a soft touch often and I dont have good "form" just what works for me. You might need another nut set for you, if you can't do it yourself. The bridge saddles just kind of float to where the string is coming from so if the nut and/or slot is not centered well, the saddle is just going the same way (downward) That would be my best guess without seeing. Thats something I wouldnt try without backups. Take to a luthier, they should be able to tell right away.
That's what I was thinking. I'm fairly heavy handed and I can get sloppy, but never had a problem my fingering sliding off the board. It might be easier to take back to GC and have them order a replacement. It sounds like this unit just might be a little off. Thanks for the feedback!
It's hard to tell from a photo unless it is taken perfectly centered but that does look too close to the edge.

Just loosen the strings, loosen the neck plate screws, push the neck over towards the strap horn and re-tighten. You might need to hold it over as you tighten. Pretty common and easy adjustment

We lost our band's bass player two weeks ago. I knew another guitarist, but no bassist, so thought I'd give it a go. Borrowed a friend's son's cheap P-bass copy, really enjoyed playing bass, but not the long scale, so just went and bought a CAR Jaguar short scale. Pic is of it with the VM Jaguar I had been playing in the band. Already have about 10 hours playing on it in 3 days and loving it.

Hey All my daughter snapped one of the tuners on her Jag (teenagers) wondering if anyone on this thread has replaced the tuners? If so what brand do you recommend. Also any suggestions for short scale strings?

And if, like me, you get really hooked on playing bass your guitars will be neglected for the next year at least. I've told everyone I know over the past two years that I enjoy bass more than 30 years of guitar and have learned more theory through playing bass than I ever did on guitar.
I got some Gotoh res-o-lites. My reasoning at the time was I wanted more accurate tuning (28:1 instead of the original 20:1) and wanted less neck dive. It improved things a little but not as much as I was hoping at the time, particularly when they cost over half the price of the bass.
In saying that, just a few weeks ago on holiday there was an open mic night at a pub near where we were staying so my girls and I went along. I had my travel bass with me but there was a Jag shorty there to use so I thought I might as well give it a go. Tuning was not as accurate and the neck dive was noticeably worse, so while I probably wouldn't bother paying that much for tuners again, it did help...... probably more so than I just helped you (none??).
I'd take up fjadams on this offer rather than spending money..... what a legend.
