Squier Jaguar Short Scale Club Part 3

I've been playing bass for about 40 years. I suppose, given all that time, I ought to be a better player than I am, but at least I enjoy myself. I figure I've owned about 30 basses over the years: various Ibanez's, Gibsons and Fenders; a beloved late-70's Musicman Stingray that I played for many years (and regret selling); a Pedulla; a Tobias; a Modulus; an Alembic Series II; a pair of Wals; a Status; a Rob Allen; etc., etc.

So it's sort of funny that the bass I've fallen absolutely in love with and which has reinvigorated my playing is the cheap-o Squier short scale Jag. Based on what I read in this forum I decided to try one out at a local store and was intrigued enough to buy it. I really appreciate all the helpful tips that people have provided in this forum. I replaced the pups in mine with a DiMarzio DP126 set, upgraded the pots & capacitor, put on GHS Precision Flats (045-095) and stuck in a bit of foam for muting. I was going for an old school Pino Palladino kind of sound and I think this bass nails it. What a joy to play: quick and light and punchy.

I liked it so much that I just picked up another one. I'll do the same upgrades on it and I think I'll replace both bridges with Gotoh 201s. I don't have a problem with the tuners, but may replace those at some point to lighten things up a bit at that end.

My plan is to eventually convert one of these to fretless by replacing the rosewood fingerboard with an unlined ebony slab. The luthier will probably think I'm nuts to spend so much on upgrading a cheap bass.

In the meantime, can I join the club?

Could you tell me what pots and capacitor you used with the DiMarzio DP126 set please....
Thinking of a similar mod for mine.....

After 50 years of owning a '59 P bass -- bought it used in '61 -- I have recently joined the Jag SS club. And loving it. It's easy to play with these aging fingers, noticeably lighter, well balanced, the red version look great with the red Tele our guitarist plays, and with the La Bella flat wounds (.049-.109) it's got serious thud. I do mostly blues and some country. I'm still fighting the stigma of playing what is usually deemed an entry level instrument, but finding The Club is gonna really help in my therapy. I'm a little shaky on use of these forums, so please bear with me. I expect to be calling on you for advice -- especially on the issue of changing out pickups. Great to be here...it turns out I am not alone. I'll post a photo -- or something -- as soon as I figure out how to do it.

Answered my own question!....
I got in touch with DiMarzio and this was their reply....

250K pots all around are the standard values, but we generally recommend 500K volume for wider frequency response with a 250K tone. The cap can be .033mFd.

Hope this helps someone....

Is this forum still active?.....
The KotN's (Keepers of the Numbers) in these clubs tend to lose interest after a while as it tends to become a PITA. I've actually taken over as KotN for three clubs so far (the three in my sig that aren't this one ;) ) and have a system that makes it not a PITA for me .

I do see that the KotN for this club was on TB 9 minutes ago so hopefully will stop in shortly :) .

No, no, it's not that at all. I just have to trim down the notifications I get so I can see this one. Anyone can PM me if they think I'm being neglectful and want a number. I really don't mind.

Your number is 171.

And always remember.

Yep, just finished modding mine to a V/B/T. Used an Elek-Trix jazz bass blender harness that also gives you 9 different tone capacitor values. You can really dial in the tone you want without spending a lot of money. It's a tight squeeze in the control route but it works.

Has anyone rewired their Jag to a different control scheme? I'm considering either a toggle/vol/tone or a mini switch for jazz on/off/parallel, but it would be cool to have a rotary switch to get P/Series/Parallel/J. Is there enough horizontal space in the control cavity for a rotary switch?
